The most striking thing about what Qualcomm revealed this week is not the speed benchmark. The Snapdragon 8 Elite Extreme Gen 6 carries enough on-chip memory to load and run AI models that, until now, required a data centre. Specifically: 30 billion-parameter mixture-of-experts models — the same category of architecture powering conversational AI services online — can now run entirely on the phone in your pocket. Your conversations, documents, and images never leave the device.

The processor reaches 5.11 GHz on its prime cores, making the Elite Extreme Gen 6 the world’s first smartphone chip to cross the 5 GHz barrier — a milestone that desktop computers only surpassed a few years ago. The standard Elite Gen 6 runs at 5 GHz on its two prime cores. Both are built on a 2-nanometre process, the same fabrication technology TSMC now applies to Apple‘s desktop chips. At that scale, Qualcomm can pack more transistors per square millimetre than any previous mobile processor.

Battery life should hold up better as well. The regular Elite Gen 6 improves CPU power efficiency by 37 percent compared to last year’s chip. The Extreme variant’s GPU delivers 44 percent more performance alongside Adreno Neural Fusion, which cuts power consumption in compatible games by up to 40 percent. For gaming phones, that combination means higher frame rates without a hot back panel.

On-device AI improvements extend beyond the Extreme variant’s 30-billion-parameter ceiling. The standard Elite Gen 6 improves NPU performance by 14 percent with 20 percent better AI efficiency per watt — relevant for the photo processing, real-time translation, and voice tasks that most users encounter daily. The camera system now supports 8K video at 60 frames per second on the Extreme variant.

The important caveat is that the 30-billion-parameter on-device AI is specific to the Elite Extreme Gen 6, Qualcomm’s higher-tier chip. The standard Elite Gen 6 does not share that memory capacity. Both chips are reserved for premium-tier handsets — phones that will sell at $1,000 and above. And while the hardware is ready, no mainstream app yet harnesses the full 30-billion-parameter capability; that depends on developers building products around the platform, with no public timeline announced.

Motorola announced the Signature 27 as one of the first handsets to ship with the Elite Extreme Gen 6. Qualcomm confirmed device partnerships with Honor, iQOO, Nubia, OnePlus, OPPO, Redmi, RedMagic, vivo, and Xiaomi. Specific launch dates for most of these phones were not disclosed at the Maui summit. The first Elite Gen 6 devices are expected before the end of 2026.
