First 2nm smartphone, 30x zoom, $899: what the Google Pixel 11 launch actually delivers

Google‘s Pixel 11 series begins pre-orders today with a chip milestone attached. The Tensor G6 is the first smartphone processor manufactured on TSMC’s 2nm node — the most advanced semiconductor fabrication process available in 2026. Four phones, starting at $899, shipping August 20. The number that justifies the price increase is printed on a process the industry spent three years reaching.

TSMC’s 2nm node uses gate-all-around transistors. In older FinFET designs, the gate material wraps around three sides of the silicon channel; gate-all-around wraps all four, giving engineers tighter current control. That means less power leakage and more compute per milliwatt. For a smartphone, the Tensor G6 can run the same AI workloads as last year’s chip using less battery — or process heavier AI tasks it previously couldn’t handle at all. The Titan M3 security coprocessor is built into the same package.

Camera hardware is where Google has always converted compute headroom into user-visible results. The Pixel 11 Pro’s triple system includes a 50MP f/1.68 main sensor, a 48MP ultrawide with autofocus, and a 48MP 5x periscope telephoto capable of 30x digital zoom. The display peaks at 3,000 nits — usable in direct sunlight. These numbers are table-stakes for the $1,099 tier; the Tensor G6’s job is to make the AI processing behind each shot faster and more accurate.

The quieter hardware change is the modem. Google is switching from Samsung’s Exynos modem — which has drawn intermittent user complaints about signal consistency and battery drain in prior Pixel models — to the MediaTek M90. Modem quality directly affects call reliability, 5G throughput, and standby drain. If the switch holds up in real-world testing, it may be the upgrade most Pixel owners feel before any benchmark confirms it.

Pricing positions the lineup firmly in flagship territory. The Pixel 11 starts at $899 for 256GB — the 128GB option has been discontinued across the entire series. Pixel 11 Pro is $1,099, Pro XL $1,299, and Pro Fold $1,899. Google has moved the base Pixel up by roughly $100 from the Pixel 10 generation. Pro models add Pixel Glow, a multi-colored rear light strip for notifications and Gemini Live interactions.

The trade Google is asking buyers to accept is familiar: Tensor chips run AI benchmarks well and CPU benchmarks modestly. Competing Snapdragon 8 Elite devices outperform them on thread-heavy workloads. Google designed the Tensor G6 for inference, not for gaming. For users whose daily use skews toward camera, voice AI, and real-time translation, that trade was already worth the price for the Pixel 10 — the 2nm generation widens the AI performance gap further without changing the CPU calculus.

If the Tensor G6 converts its manufacturing lead into camera results and on-device AI speed that the $899 price demands, the upgrade case for Pixel 10 owners writes itself. If the gap between benchmark and daily use holds, the most compelling feature may turn out to be the MediaTek modem — a modest fix to a persistent annoyance that a two-year-old chip couldn’t solve.
