God of War Laufey Delayed to May 2027, and Sony’s Note Skips the Pre-Orders

Santa Monica Studio has moved God of War Laufey out of winter and into late spring, and its explanation is the one every big delay gets: more time and more polish. The calendar it leaves behind says more than the statement does, and so does what the statement leaves out.

Laufey was due in the most crowded stretch of the coming year. It now lands in a quieter slot, one that also guarantees PlayStation a major first-party release in the spring. Players who already pre-ordered the game, or its collector merchandise, got thanks for their patience and no word on their orders.

What Santa Monica Studio said

The new release date is May 20, 2027, replacing February 16, 2027: a slip of just over three months. The studio announced it in a short social media post. “With this in mind, we’ve made the decision to delay God of War Laufey’s release to May 20th, 2027,” it wrote. “We will make the most of each moment until then by putting in the finishing touches and pushing the game to its fullest potential.”

That is the whole explanation. Eurogamer notes that the studio stopped short of giving a reason, and GamesRadar calls the reasoning vague. Shacknews points out that a February launch announced from a June reveal always sounded ambitious, perhaps overly so. A few reports carry stray errors about the old date: GamesRadar gives February 17, and PlayStation Universe typed 2026. The February 16 date is the one the studio itself used in September, when pre-orders opened.

The calendar behind the polish

February 2027 is stacked. Eurogamer lists the Fable reboot, Persona 4 Revival and Metro 2039 in that month alone. Engadget adds Sony’s own Until Dawn 2 on January 28, and notes that Sony usually ships each year’s MLB The Show in March. A God of War arriving in the middle of that would have shared shelf space with Fable, Persona and Metro, a few weeks after Sony’s own horror sequel.

May is a different proposition. Engadget’s reading is that the delay guarantees Sony at least one first-party game in the spring quarter of 2027. Nobody at Sony has said that out loud, and nobody needs to. “Finishing touches” and a cleaner launch window are not competing explanations. A delay that buys both at once is about the cheapest kind a publisher can make, and Sony made it three months out rather than three weeks.

What it means if you pre-ordered

Pre-orders opened on September 29 for two PS5 editions, Standard and Digital Deluxe. Push Square listed them as starting at $70. Both carry the same pre-order bonus: the Last Wish Armor Set, a Phranque Golden Leaves Appearance and an in-game resource pack. The Digital Deluxe adds the Dark Alchemy armor set and gear, a digital mini artbook and the soundtrack. Santa Monica confirmed back in July that the game will also be sold on disc.

The most expensive item is the one that needs checking. The Collector Box sold through PlayStation Direct costs $149.99, €149.99 or £129.99, and VGC stresses that it does not include the game. It holds an eight-inch light-up statue of Faye, Phranque and Rue, a 51-card Oracle Deck and a mini artbook, and it was set to ship on February 16 alongside the game.

The delay statement does not mention the editions, the bonuses or the box. VideoCardz flags the same gap: it is unclear whether the move affects existing orders or the availability of physical editions. Until Sony or the retailer confirms the new dates, buyers should check their own order pages rather than assume anything has moved.

Why this date matters more than most

Laufey is the first mainline God of War not led by Kratos. Players control Faye, his Norse wife and the mother of Atreus, whose death sets off the 2018 game. Deborah Ann Woll plays her. The story runs alongside God of War and God of War Ragnarök and takes place in the Everywhen, an afterlife where gods from several mythologies compete for power. PlayStation Universe reports that Egyptian and Mongolian myth join the Norse material. Faye’s companions are Phranque, a talking cube, and Rue, an enchanted ribbon. Eurogamer says the game brings back the faster combat of the original series.

The stakes go beyond one release. Eurogamer reports that, according to Cory Barlog, the next Kratos game will follow on from and connect to Laufey’s events. That makes Faye’s game the bridge to the series’ next chapter, not a side story Sony can afford to ship unfinished.

Santa Monica has bought itself three months and a clear spring. It still owes the people holding a $149.99 box with a February date on the receipt one sentence about what happens to their order.
