Twice now, a major franchise has drawn up its plans without Deborah Ann Woll’s character and then had to redraw them. The first version of Marvel‘s Daredevil: Born Again left out Karen Page, the woman she had played for three seasons on Netflix. Santa Monica Studio introduced Faye, Kratos’s wife, as a body already on the funeral pyre. Both women came back larger. Karen is now the person the series’ own showrunner calls the heart of its mythology, and Faye is the playable lead of a new God of War game. Woll keeps proving she can carry the story, and the people who own the story keep needing a second draft to notice.

Her road there was a conventional one. She was born and raised in Brooklyn, the daughter of Peter L. Woll, an architect, and Catherine Champney, who taught at the Berkeley Carroll School. She went to the Packer Collegiate Institute, then to the USC School of Theatre, where she earned a fine arts degree, with a period at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art in London along the way. The first jobs were single episodes of network shows such as ER and My Name Is Earl.

The part that changed things arrived in 2008, a year after she graduated, when she was 23. In HBO’s True Blood, Woll played Jessica Hamby, a teenage girl turned into a vampire by Bill Compton and left to work out what kind of creature she would be. The role began as a recurring one in the first season and became a regular from the second until the series ended in 2014. Jessica was the show’s least ironic figure, a girl whose hunger and guilt arrived at full volume, and Woll played her without winking at the audience. The cast won the Satellite Award for best television ensemble in 2009 and picked up a Screen Actors Guild ensemble nomination the following year.

Film offered her quieter, odder work. Her feature debut was the horror remake Mother’s Day, and the next stretch brought the golf drama Seven Days in Utopia, the action thriller Catch .44 and Roberto Faenza’s Someday This Pain Will Be Useful to You, along with a brief turn in Ruby Sparks. The commercial peak came with Escape Room in 2019, a puzzle-box thriller that opened to 18.2 million dollars and finished above 155 million worldwide. She returned for Escape Room: Tournament of Champions, and later played the wrestler Gladys Gillem in Queen of the Ring, the biopic of Mildred Burke.

Karen Page is the role most people know. In Netflix’s Daredevil, between 2015 and 2018, she was the female lead opposite Charlie Cox‘s Matt Murdock and the only one of the core trio without a law degree, a legal secretary turned reporter who shot James Wesley, the Kingpin’s right hand, and lived with it. The part followed her into The Defenders and The Punisher and earned her a Saturn Award nomination. When Netflix cancelled its Marvel shows, Karen seemed finished.

That is where the story gets less flattering for the studio. Marvel’s first plan for Daredevil: Born Again was a legal procedural, and Karen was not in it. Woll has said she was hurt not to be part of that version and hesitated when the call finally came, after a creative overhaul brought in showrunner Dario Scardapane. She agreed once she heard what he wanted for the character, yet the first season opened by killing Foggy Nelson and then kept Karen at the margins for most of the run, as Scardapane himself conceded. The second season, which ran on Disney+ from March to May 2026, gave her the resistance plot and a rekindled romance with Matt Murdock, and both she and Scardapane said they did not want a sidekick or a girlfriend. Even so, its climax hangs on Karen in the dock and Matt unmasking himself in court to free her. A week later, in the special The Punisher: One Last Kill, she appeared only as a hallucination berating Frank Castle. The franchise speaks of her as its conscience and keeps staging her as the thing the men must save or answer to.

Away from Marvel, Woll has found more room in places where she controls the shape of the story. She voiced Faye in God of War Ragnarök, her first role in motion capture, and Santa Monica Studio has since built God of War Laufey around her: the first mainline game in the series in which Kratos is not the protagonist, opening just after the funeral that began the 2018 game. On stage she took on Katherine in The Taming of the Shrew at the Old Globe in San Diego and Harper in Angels in America at Arena Stage in Washington. And for years she kept her love of Dungeons & Dragons private, until the web series Force Grey in 2016 cracked that shell. Since then she has been the one running the game: Dungeon Master of Relics and Rarities, of Children of Éarte and of Tales From Woodcreek, the series she created with Ed Gass-Donnelly that turned a historic pioneer village in Toronto into a playable escape room. She also consulted on the 2024 Dungeon Master’s Guide. At that table, nobody forgets to write her in.

Her private life is mostly kept that way. She has been with E. J. Scott since 2007, and they married in December 2018. Scott has choroideremia, a genetic condition that ends in blindness, and Woll uses her platform to raise awareness of it. She has said his attitude towards his disability gave her courage in her own, smaller fight with celiac disease.

The next six months put her everywhere at once. The Cycle, Jordan Downey’s horror film, arrives exclusively on Shudder on October 23, 2026, with Woll as a woman whose estranged father, missing for 36 years, turns up dead at the scene of a gruesome crime; Jeffrey Donovan co-stars. She has joined the second season of The Testaments, the follow-up to The Handmaid’s Tale, as Sylvia, a seamstress whose work keeps her close to the wives and daughters of Gilead’s Commanders. God of War Laufey is due on PlayStation 5 on February 16, 2027, and the third and final season of Daredevil: Born Again, which began filming in March 2026 with Woll back as Karen, according to reports from the set, is scheduled for Disney+ the following month. Two franchises that once planned around her will close their next chapters with her at the centre, and the one test still open is whether the last season of Born Again lets Karen decide her own ending.
