Gears of War: E-Day Disconnects Blamed on DDoS Attacks Ahead of Ranked Launch

The Coalition has explained why the launch weekend broke. It has not said the attack is over, and the competitive mode opens next.

The disconnects that hit Gears of War: E-Day on its first weekend now have an explanation. The Coalition says the login failures and dropped matches were caused by distributed denial-of-service attacks on the game’s online services. What the studio left out matters as much as what it confirmed: it named no attacker, gave no measure of the disruption and did not say the problem is over.

That last gap is the one players should read closely. The Coalition held its competitive Ranked mode back from launch so people could learn the game first, and that mode is now due to open into a service its own studio still describes as under watch.

What The Coalition actually confirmed

The statement went out on the Gears Community account on X late on Sunday, Pacific time. It said some players “experienced intermittent disconnects, login issues, or other service disruptions,” and that “these issues were due to distributed denial-of-service (DDoS) attacks targeting our online services.” The studio added that its teams “are continuing to monitor and mitigate this activity” and that it would post updates “if there are any significant changes.”

A DDoS attack does not break into anything. It floods a service with junk traffic until legitimate requests can no longer get through: a sign-in, a matchmaking call, the steady signal that keeps a player connected to a match already underway. That is where the weekend’s symptoms clustered. Video Games Chronicle reported players struggling to join multiplayer matches on Sunday and connections dropping for some who made it in. The statement describes an attack on availability; it makes no mention of accounts or player data.

Two messages from the same weekend

The messaging did not line up. Xbox Support told players on X that the game was back to normal and the issues were resolved, and some replied that they were still having trouble connecting. The Coalition’s own wording stayed open-ended, and The Escapist noted the studio had not declared the problem fixed. Kotaku’s read was that the studio seemed to get on top of it within a few hours.

The timeline adds a second loose end. According to the support account’s posts, compiled by Gaming.net, the team acknowledged extended login times on Sunday and later wrote that “the login issue has been resolved.” The DDoS explanation arrived a few hours after that. The studio has not said whether the login slowdown it called resolved was the same attack it was still mitigating.

Why the timing matters for Ranked

Versus Ranked was kept out of both the Premium Edition early access and the full launch. The Coalition said the extra week gives players “crucial time to get up-to-speed” with the maps, modes and sandbox. It is scheduled for October 13, one week after launch. Ranked is the mode where results are supposed to count, so a connection that holds is the one thing it cannot do without.

The business model raises the stakes. E-Day is a Game Pass launch first and a boxed sale second: Alinea Analytics estimates around 230,000 copies sold across both platforms in the first week, against an estimated 1.7 million people playing through Game Pass. For a game measured by how many people sign in and keep playing, the login screen is the storefront, and on launch weekend that storefront was the part under attack.

Gears of War: E-Day, developed by The Coalition with People Can Fly and published by Xbox Game Studios, launched on October 6, 2026 on Xbox Series X|S and PC, including Steam, with day-one access on Game Pass Ultimate and PC Game Pass. Premium Edition owners started on October 1. Season 1, Emergence, runs until December 1, and Season 2 is set to mark the series’ 20th anniversary.

The Coalition has promised an update only if something significant changes. With Ranked open, players will be judging that for themselves, one match at a time.
