Travis Scott, the Rapper Who Composes for the Crowd and Still Answers for It

Travis Scott makes records for a crowd before he makes them for a listener. His songs are built from bass that lands in the chest, vocals smeared through Auto-Tune and delay, and beat switches timed for the second a floor of bodies jumps at once. The word his audience uses for it is raging, and he treats the pit as part of the arrangement. That instinct produced the highest-grossing tour any solo rapper has staged, and it sits beneath the night in his hometown when a crowd pressed toward his stage and ten people died. He is now making a new album, he says, for “the person that’s all the way back in the bowl.”

He was born Jacques Bermon Webster II in Houston on April 30, 1991, and spent his first six years with his grandmother in South Park, a rough neighbourhood he later credited with giving him his edge. His parents then moved him to Missouri City, a middle-class suburb on the city’s southwest rim. Music ran in the family: his father played soul and his grandfather composed jazz. At Elkins High School he did musical theatre and graduated at seventeen, then enrolled at the University of Texas at San Antonio and left in his second year to make beats full time. The stage name joins his favourite uncle, Travis, to the first name of Scott Mescudi, the rapper known as Kid Cudi.

The first years were a run of false starts. Duos with school friends, The Graduates and then The Classmates, put out small projects online before splitting over money and personal friction. He tried Washington Heights in New York, then Los Angeles, where he ended up sleeping on a student’s couch. The break came through production rather than rapping. T.I. heard his beat for “Lights (Love Sick)” and called him in, and in 2012 Scott signed a recording deal with Epic Records and a producer’s publishing deal with Kanye West‘s GOOD Music, followed a year later by a joint venture with T.I.’s Grand Hustle.

The mixtapes Owl Pharaoh and Days Before Rodeo set out the palette he still uses: dense, dark, psychedelic trap shaped with the producer Mike Dean, whose synth work runs through nearly every major Scott record since. Scott has named Björk as one of his biggest inspirations and once insisted, “I’m not hip-hop.” His debut album, Rodeo, arrived in 2015 and gave him “Antidote,” his first real hit. Birds in the Trap Sing McKnight went to number one on the Billboard 200 a year later, and in 2017 he launched Cactus Jack Records, the imprint that would carry Don Toliver and Sheck Wes.

Astroworld, released in August 2018 and named after a demolished Houston amusement park, was the record that made him a mainstream event. It sold 537,000 units in its first week, and “Sicko Mode,” a multi-part suite with Drake, became his first Hot 100 number one. Between 2019 and 2020 he became the first artist to debut three songs at the top of that chart within twelve months, with “Highest in the Room,” “The Scotts” alongside Kid Cudi, and “Franchise.” His concerts inside Fortnite in April 2020 drew more than 27 million participants, and a McDonald’s meal bearing his name drew enough demand that autumn to leave some restaurants short of ingredients. For a while the brand looked frictionless.

Then came November 5, 2021. During his headline set at the Astroworld Festival in Houston’s NRG Park, a crowd crush killed ten people between the ages of nine and 27 and injured hundreds more. Video from that night shows Scott performing on while fans chanted for the show to stop; he paused briefly when he saw someone hurt and then kept going. It was not the first warning. He had been arrested after Lollapalooza in 2015 for urging fans past security, pleading guilty to reckless conduct, and again after a 2017 show in Arkansas for similar conduct. In June 2023 a Texas grand jury declined to indict him, and the families of all ten victims later settled their wrongful-death suits on confidential terms. The legal account closed; the artistic one did not. The energy his shows sell is the same energy that turned lethal, and the shows that followed kept that premise and grew larger.

Utopia, released in July 2023, opened with 496,000 units and held number one for four weeks, even as reviews split on whether its sprawl added up. It came with Circus Maximus, an anthology film Scott made with directors including Gaspar Noé, Nicolas Winding Refn and Harmony Korine. The Circus Maximus Tour that followed ran from October 2023 to a final show in Mumbai in November 2025 and grossed $265.1 million from 2.1 million tickets, according to Billboard Boxscore, a record for a solo rapper. In between, the 2024 streaming reissue of Days Before Rodeo climbed to number one, “4×4” debuted at the top of the Hot 100 in January 2025 as his fifth number one, and the label compilation JackBoys 2 gave him another chart-topping album that July. The Recording Academy has yet to follow: he has ten Grammy nominations and no wins. “I still need a Grammy,” he told Variety this summer, “but I would love to take home an Oscar.”

The Oscar line is less of a joke than it sounds. In Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey, released in July 2026, Scott plays a bard who appears in the opening seconds. Nolan cast him, he told Variety, because rappers carry on the oral storytelling that poets practised in ancient Greece. Scott co-wrote the end-credits song, “When I’m Home,” with James Blake and Ludwig Göransson, and directed its video. Cactus Jack then signed a first-look deal with Paramount Pictures covering film, television, theatre and live experiences. Since September there is also a Cactus Jack eyewear line with Oakley, where he holds the title of chief visionary officer.

His private life has played out in public mostly through his relationship with Kylie Jenner, which began in 2017 and ended by early 2023. They have two children, Stormi, born in 2018, and Aire, born in 2022.

That record is the open question. On August 29, 2026, Scott posted “Album OTW” on Instagram, with the producers Mike Dean and Anthony Kilhoffer attached and no title or date. He has said it draws on Parliament, Oasis, Van Halen and Daft Punk, and that Utopia “was supposed to be a play.” Whatever arrives will be measured, as everything he releases now is, against the crowd it is designed to move.
