Hellraiser: Revival turns the puzzle box that summons Pinhead into a weapon

Every Hellraiser story begins with the same mistake: someone solves the puzzle box. The Cenobites arrive, and the person holding the box has almost no say in what happens next. Clive Barker’s Hellraiser: Revival keeps the mistake and rewrites the second half. Its box, the Genesis Configuration, stays in the player’s hand for the whole game, and it works as a weapon.

Revival is a first-person survival horror game developed and published by Saber Interactive, made together with Boss Team Games, the company that also partnered with Saber on Evil Dead: The Game in 2022. It launches on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, Nintendo Switch 2 and PC. Emil Esov directs, Antony De Fault wrote the script, and the game runs on Unreal Engine 5. Barker, who created the series with his 1986 novella The Hellbound Heart and directed the first Hellraiser film a year later, was consulted from the start of development, and the story was written in collaboration with him.

You play Aidan Lynch, a member of a biker gang. He and his girlfriend Sunny find the Genesis Configuration, and one reckless night with it opens the door to the Cenobites. Pinhead takes Sunny into the Labyrinth, the Cenobites’ realm, and Aidan goes after her, fighting both the demons and a human cult called the Scarlet Church. The trailer above, titled Love Story and released for Valentine’s Day, plays the couple’s life together as a romance montage until the horror breaks through. It is a fair summary of the premise: a rescue story told in the franchise’s language of pleasure and pain.

The voice that will matter most to longtime fans belongs to Doug Bradley. He played Pinhead in the first eight Hellraiser films, from the 1987 original to Hellraiser: Hellworld in 2005, and later films recast the role. Revival brings him back to the Cenobite leader about two decades on. Aidan is voiced by Xalavier Nelson Jr., better known as the head of the independent studio Strange Scaffold, and Leader Looi plays Sunny.

The Genesis Configuration is where Revival gets inventive. In the films the box is a lock that opens onto hell. Here it becomes a supernatural toolkit. Aidan can use it to lift and hurl objects at enemies, scorch them with hellfire and trigger gruesome finishing moves. Defeated enemies give up a resource called Suffering, which feeds the box, and its strongest attack, Hell Chains, calls up the hooked chains that have been the series’ signature image since 1987. The box also solves puzzles, so the object you fight with is the same object you think with.

Around it sits a more familiar survival horror kit. Melee weapons wear out with use, firearms range from pistols to submachine guns, ammunition is scarce and a dodge is the main defence. You can lay traps, bear traps among them, scavenge healing items and barter for upgrades, and the game rewards stealth takedowns over open fights. Enemies include cultists and creatures the developers call Runners, Bursters and the Unworthy. Early hands-on reports compared the structure to Resident Evil and BioShock and described several ways through each encounter rather than a single corridor.

You do not have to take anyone’s word for it. A free demo has been live on Steam since September 17 and covers the opening chapter. It starts in a goth nightclub that hides a cult compound underneath, and it ends with a chase through the Labyrinth pursued by the Chatterer, the Cenobite with the permanently bared teeth, where running is the only option. A gameplay overview trailer released on September 23, narrated by Nelson, walks through the combat and the box’s powers in more detail.

Not every early impression has been warm. A demo write-up at Tom’s Gaming found the dodge hard to master, disliked that failing the Chatterer chase sends you back to its start, and asked whether every room needed to look like a torture dungeon. That last point is also the game’s promise. Steam’s content warnings list torture, mutilation, gore, BDSM references, suicide themes, domestic abuse and substance abuse, and the Love Story trailer went out as a red band cut. This is Hellraiser played straight, not softened for a wider audience.

Clive Barker’s Hellraiser: Revival arrives on October 8, 2026. The Nintendo Switch 2 version is available to pre-order for $39.99, and the Steam standard edition costs €39.99, with a €49.99 Deluxe Edition that adds a melee weapon called The Nailer, extra skins, a digital art book, the soundtrack, a novella and a retro film filter. Boss Team Games’ collector’s editions include a replica of the Genesis Configuration, so the box can sit on a shelf. The more interesting question is how it feels to finally open it on purpose, and in ten days players will find out.
