Nintendo is a Japanese multinational video game company headquartered in Kyoto. Founded in 1889 by Fusajiro Yamauchi as a maker of hanafuda playing cards, it spent nearly a century in traditional games before reinventing itself as one of the most influential forces in the video game industry.

Home to franchises such as Mario, The Legend of Zelda, Pokémon, Donkey Kong and Metroid, and to consoles from the NES and Game Boy to the Wii and the Switch, Nintendo remains one of Japan’s most valuable companies and a defining name in interactive entertainment.
