GTA 6 File Size: 210GB on PS5, and the Box Holds Only a Download Code

PlayStation Store data puts the standard edition at 210GB. Rockstar has not confirmed the figure, and its boxed copies carry a code instead of a disc

The new Grand Theft Auto VI number is a storage figure, but the decision that gives it weight was taken months ago, when Rockstar chose to sell the game without a disc. The box in the shop holds a download code. Whatever the final size turns out to be, every player receives it the same way: through their own connection, onto their own drive, in the days before launch.

That changes what a big file means. Most of the coverage reads the leak as a reminder to clear some space. Space is half of it. The other half is the line into the house, and on launch night that line is being asked for the same game by everyone at once.

Where the GTA 6 file size comes from

The figure is 210GB for the standard edition on PS5. It was posted by PlayStation Game Size, an account on X that reads upcoming download sizes from the PlayStation Store’s backend, together with the pre-load date, the launch date and a midnight release time. VideoCardz reports that Insider Gaming corroborated the number independently. Neither Rockstar nor Sony has published it, and Rockstar has released no storage requirements.

So ComicBook’s description of the size as “officially revealed” goes further than its own source. GamesRadar calls it unconfirmed, and Screen Rant points out that Rockstar may not have settled on a final size yet. The number describes what the store holds today. No figure has surfaced for Xbox Series X|S, and GamesRadar warns that download and install sizes can differ. It does fit the earlier leak, though: the hacker CyberLeek claimed a playable development build of more than 200GB, which Notebookcheck now reads as vindicated.

No disc means every GTA 6 copy is a full download

Rockstar confirmed in June that the physical edition ships with a download code inside the box, VGC reported. That removes the usual fallback. Screen Rant makes the point in passing: without a disc, a player on a slow connection cannot pull even part of the game’s files from the box. The network carries everything.

The arithmetic is plain. At a steady 100 megabits per second, 210GB is close to five hours of uninterrupted downloading. At a quarter of that speed it takes most of a day. Pre-orders can start pre-loading a week before launch, which is exactly the buffer a file this size needs. Anyone who buys a box on launch day starts the whole download that day.

Whether a patch lands on top is still open. GamesRadar expects “some sort of day-one update”; ComicBook says players will boot at midnight without downloading anything else. Rockstar has said neither.

How much of a PS5 the GTA 6 download takes

The outlets disagree on the share. Notebookcheck says a quarter of a standard PS5’s storage; VideoCardz says almost a third of the usable space on the original model. The second matches the hardware. The launch PS5 has an 825GB drive of which about 667GB is usable, because part is reserved for system software, according to Stevivor’s storage guide. On that console the game alone fills close to a third. The PS5 Pro, with a 2TB drive, has far more headroom.

The fixes have limits. Sony’s M.2 expansion slot takes drives from 250GB to 8TB. A USB drive is cheaper, but per Sony’s own guidance PS5 games stored on USB must be copied back to the console or to an M.2 drive before they can be played. An external disk can hold the games you are moving out of the way. It cannot run GTA 6.

GTA 6 file size against GTA 5, Red Dead Redemption 2 and Call of Duty

The growth curve is steep. Screen Rant notes that GTA 5 was an 8.5GB base game on PS3 and Xbox 360 and has grown to around 100GB in its current form. GamesRadar puts Red Dead Redemption 2 at 150GB on PC and the base PS5 versions of both Rockstar games closer to 100 to 110GB. GTA 6 is not alone at the top, either: VideoCardz recalls that Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War reached nearly 220GB with every mode installed.

The difference is what GTA 6 still has to add. The launch version is a single-player game, VGC reported, and the next GTA Online is expected later. ComicBook notes that Rockstar could ship it as a separate download or fold it into the same install. GTA 6 arrives on November 19 on PS5 and Xbox Series X|S, with pre-loading from November 12, at $80 for the Standard Edition and $100 for the Ultimate Edition.

The box on the shelf will weigh a few grams. What it unlocks still has to travel 210GB down a home connection before anyone reaches Vice City.
