Oppo’s Find X9 Ultra packs a 10x optical zoom and a 300mm add-on lens

The Chinese flagship most Western buyers had only heard about finally goes global, with five Hasselblad-engineered lenses and a bolt-on telephoto kit that turns the phone into a real camera body. At £1,449, Oppo is arguing that the camera in your pocket and the camera on your shelf should finally be the same device.

Oppo’s Find X9 Ultra ships with five rear cameras, including a 50-megapixel 10x optical periscope telephoto and twin 200-megapixel sensors — a configuration no other mainstream flagship currently sells. The point is not a spec-sheet flex. It is the first mass-market smartphone genuinely designed to replace the compact camera that photographers stopped carrying around a decade ago.

The main sensor is a Sony LYT-901 measuring 1/1.12 of an inch — the largest 200MP camera sensor ever fitted to a phone. An f/1.5 aperture and 23mm-equivalent lens sit in front of it, with optical image stabilisation. The 3x telephoto uses another 200MP sensor; the 10x periscope uses what Oppo calls a Quintuple Prism Reflection structure to fold a genuine long lens into the thickness of a phone.

What matters in practice is the consistency. All five lenses shoot 4K video at 60 frames per second in Dolby Vision HDR across a zoom range of 0.6x to 30x, and the colour matches between them. Stills support 50-megapixel RAW and JPEG across every focal length, along with nine film simulations.

Oppo has revived a Hasselblad Master Mode that deliberately avoids AI processing — users control the full imaging chain, which in early reviews produces less of the aggressive tone mapping that has made many flagship phone photos look artificial. A dedicated orange camera button on the Tundra Umber model controls the shutter, locks exposure with a half-press and slides to zoom. The body is vegan leather over metal, designed to echo the Hasselblad X2D 100C II medium-format camera.

A 7,050mAh silicon-carbon battery drives two-day endurance in a 9.1mm, 237-gram body powered by the Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5. A multispectral True Color sensor handles white balance using 80 per cent less power than the previous generation. Splash Touch keeps the screen responsive in the rain.

The compromises are visible. The camera module is substantial and the phone feels top-heavy in portrait. Standard auto mode still occasionally over-sharpens and leans too aggressively on HDR. The optional Hasselblad Earth Explorer Kit adds a grip, two-stage shutter and a 300mm teleconverter that pushes reach to 60x — but the teleconverter will not work inside Master Mode, and kit pricing has not been announced. The 16GB/1TB configuration and the Arctic White colour remain China-exclusive.

The Find X9 Ultra launched globally on 21 April 2026, with UK pricing set at £1,449 for the 12GB/512GB version. European availability expands through the coming weeks, ahead of the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 8 announcement in London on 22 July, which will be its next direct flagship competitor.
