Rhythm games have always been a little authoritarian. Somebody else picks the song, somebody else decides where every beat lands, and the player’s job is to obey with good timing. Glee-Cheese, the small French studio behind A Musical Story and Headbangers Rhythm Royale, has built its whole catalogue inside that contract. Its next game, MR. RECORDS, is about an old man who finally opens the record shop he spent a lifetime imagining, and its Steam Next Fest demo now loosens the contract: the shop lets you press records of your own.

The new Music Level Editor, available in the updated Steam demo, is built around a music timeline. Players place notes, obstacles and effects along the track, then jump straight into the level to play what they made. Assets, colours, animations and backgrounds are all customisable, with movement synced to the beat. In the announcement, publisher Wired Productions frames it as giving players the tools to create, customise and play their very own records, a neat fit for a game whose whole premise is that a record is a place you can walk into.

That premise belongs to George, an ageing dreamer who, after a lifetime of standing still, breaks from routine and opens the shop he always wished for. By day he sells vinyl to a cast of quirky customers, solving their musical riddles and recommending the right album. When the shutters come down, the records come alive: each track becomes a rhythm level through his imagination, where he runs, jumps, slides and chains actions in time with the music, with his loyal dog Buzz never far away. The full game promises more than 40 handcrafted levels, plus rhythm battles, minigames and chase sequences.

What makes the editor more than a bonus mode is how personal the original soundtrack is meant to be. The developers composed it themselves, ranging across funk, progressive rock, hip-hop, electro, world music and ’80s pop, and the songs are bound to George’s memories: some joyful, others about regret, lost love and the life he never truly lived. Handing players the same tools turns one man’s mixtape into an open shelf. On PC, players can also build levels from their own music and share them for others to play, the kind of feature that keeps a rhythm game alive long after its official setlist runs out.

Glee-Cheese is an independent studio based in France. Its debut, A Musical Story, launched in 2022, and Headbangers Rhythm Royale followed on October 31, 2023. MR. RECORDS was revealed in June 2026 at Day of the Devs and is published by Wired Productions, the independent publisher based in Watford, England.

The game is coming to PC, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S and Nintendo Switch 2, with the Level Editor included in every version of the full game; using your own music is a PC feature. No release date has been announced. The demo is available now on Steam, and the full game can be wishlisted on Steam, GOG, the Epic Games Store, PlayStation and Xbox, with Switch 2 wishlisting to follow.

For a game about a man who waited too long to start living, it is a fitting gesture. The shop is open, and the stock is no longer only George’s.
