Keep Driving, the Post Void duo’s slow-lane road trip RPG, pulls onto PS5, Xbox and Switch

Before Keep Driving, the two-person Gothenburg studio YCJY was best known for Post Void, a feverish first-person shooter built to be finished in minutes and replayed at a sprint. Their road trip RPG argues for the opposite tempo. It hands you a first car, a long summer and a festival on the far side of the country, then keeps repeating the same quiet advice: take it easy. You’re young. You have time. That idea, that the journey is something to spend rather than a distance to beat, turned the game into a quiet indie favourite on PC, and it is now out on Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S.

The console launch comes with a live-action trailer, an unusual choice for a game drawn in dense pixel art, and a telling one: the studio wants you to recognise the feeling before the systems. Those systems are subtler than they look. Keep Driving is a management RPG laid over a procedurally generated map of highways, dirt tracks and country lanes. You pick up hitchhikers who carry their own personalities and stories, take odd jobs for fuel money, and repair and customise the car. Trouble on the road, from a speed camera to a tractor you cannot get past, is settled through a turn-based “combat” system in which your weapons are your skills and whatever is rattling around in the glovebox.

The structure is the game’s real argument. There is no single road to master. A trip lasts roughly one to four hours and there are multiple endings; reach one and the game sends you back to the start to see what would have happened had you turned elsewhere. Josef Martinovsky and Christopher Andreasson list their influences openly: Oregon Trail II, FTL, Jalopy, the board games Gloomhaven and The 7th Continent, and road movies such as Paris, Texas and Two-Lane Blacktop. The landscapes were modelled on Gothenburg and its surroundings, and the soundtrack leans on the city’s indie rock scene, with bands such as Westkust and Makthaverskan riding along on the car stereo.

It has been a long drive for the project itself. The duo first started it in 2016, after The Aquatic Adventure of the Last Human, shelved it for lack of money and experience, and made Sea Salt and Post Void before coming back to it full time. When it finally reached PC in February 2025 it earned an 84 on Metacritic, having already taken the Grand Jury Award at IndieCade in 2024. In the announcement, the team leans on Autoevolution’s verdict that it is “an instant darling and a bright-shining gem.”

The console editions arrive with every update released on Steam since launch: nine additional languages, a new ending, new road events and extra locations to explore. PC players get their own gift on the same day, official mod support through the Steam Workshop, which stays exclusive to the PC version.

For a game this committed to the slow lane, the arrival on a handheld feels overdue. Keep Driving always looked like something to play on a long journey, with the window down and nowhere urgent to be.
