Kai Trump, the golfer whose invitations keep arriving ahead of her scores

Most golfers spend years proving they belong in a field before anyone invites them into it. Kai Trump’s career has run in the opposite direction. The invitations came first, to a small junior event built around the best teenagers in the world and then to a full-field LPGA Tour tournament hosted by Annika Sörenstam, and her scorecards have been trying to catch up ever since. The gap is not in dispute. The more telling choice is where she has decided to close it: a Division I college team, where a place in the travelling line-up is earned in qualifying rounds and no sponsor can hand it over.

Kai Madison Trump was born in New York City, the first child of Donald Trump Jr. and Vanessa Trump and the first grandchild of Donald Trump. Her first name comes from her great-grandfather Kai Ewans, a Danish jazz reed player, and she is the eldest of five siblings. The University of Miami lists her hometown as Stuart, Florida. She played her high school golf at The Benjamin School in Palm Beach Gardens, helping the team to four consecutive district titles.

Golf reached her through family access, something she has acknowledged without embarrassment. When she announced her verbal commitment to Miami in August 2024, she thanked her grandfather for “giving me access to great courses.” Her junior record was built on Florida circuits such as the Srixon Medalist Tour, with some starts on the AJGA: a second place at the 2024 Martin County Junior Open, a runner-up finish at Village Golf Course in 2025, a third place at Lost City Golf Club and a top-ten at the 2025 Cognizant High School Invitational. Those are solid results for a regional high school player. They are not, on their own, the results that open doors at the top of the women’s game. She graduated in May 2026, three days after her 19th birthday.

The doors opened for another reason. In July 2024 she spoke at the Republican National Convention in Milwaukee, describing her grandfather as “just a normal grandpa,” and her Instagram audience jumped from about 125,000 to 185,000 followers in less than a day. She turned that attention into a golf-and-daily-life YouTube channel that had passed 1.5 million subscribers by the summer of 2026, with some 3.7 million followers on TikTok and 2.7 million on Instagram. The audience became a business. On3 has valued her name, image and likeness at more than $1.2 million; her first deal was with Leaf Trading Cards, followed by TaylorMade and Accelerator Active Energy, the drinks brand in which she is an equity partner and for which she launched her own flavor, Blue Raz Slush.

The first public test of the distance between following and form came in March 2025 at the Junior Invitational at Sage Valley, a 24-player girls’ field of elite juniors. She finished last, 52 over par. Eight months later she accepted a sponsor exemption into The Annika at Pelican Golf Club in Belleair, Florida, her LPGA Tour debut, arriving a week after signing her letter of intent with Miami. She opened with an 83, admitted that “the nerves just got to me,” and returned the next day with a 75 that included four birdies, the first of them on the par-three third. At 18 over she finished last of 108 and missed the cut. Sörenstam described the week as one of “opportunities and memories and lessons learned.”

The criticism has always been sharper about the invitations than about the player. When she teed up at Pelican she stood 461st in the AJGA rankings, and the tournament’s owner, Don Doyle Jr., defended the exemption by pointing to the attention and viewership she would bring. Golf writers answered that a sponsor invitation spent on reach is a start taken from a young professional chasing status on tour. Both readings are accurate, which is what makes her an uncomfortable case study: the exemptions say more about how the professional game prices an audience than about her swing, and she has accepted each one knowing her worst round would be watched by more people than the rest of the field combined. What she has not yet had is a stretch of events in which she was simply one more player trying to make the team.

Her left wrist has shaped everything since. She hurt it in practice in November 2025, tried conservative treatment for about two months and in January 2026 had surgery to repair the stabilizing tissue of the ECU tendon and damage to the triangular fibrocartilage complex, performed by Dr. Thomas Graham at the Lehigh Valley Orthopedic Institute. The rehabilitation filled the spring in which she finished high school.

Her college debut came in September 2026 at the Golfweek Fall Challenge at Caledonia Golf & Fish Club in Pawleys Island, South Carolina. She shot 78, 76 and 81 to finish 22 over, tied for 102nd in a 120-player field. During the event she caught the ground near a cart path and later felt a jolt run up the same arm on a drive at the 10th hole. Doctors found a small area of damage to cartilage and ligaments, and she has been treated with stem cell injections rather than a second operation.

The campus vlogs that followed show a freshman who drives home to her family almost every weekend, about an hour and twenty minutes up the coast, and who calls the Secret Service agents that follow her to class, because her grandfather is president, “really awkward.” Her clearest statement of intent came in one of those videos: “I’m here for golf. I’m not here to party in Miami.” The team she joined started the season ranked 21st in Golf Channel’s preseason poll, a line-up in which a freshman’s place is never guaranteed.

Miami’s next start is the Ruth’s Chris Tar Heel Invitational at the University of North Carolina’s Finley Golf Course, from October 16 to 18. Whether she is in that line-up depends on the wrist and on qualifying against her own teammates, the first measure of her career that no invitation can settle.
