Tomoko Aran gets co-credit on The Weeknd’s Out of Time with 16 million YouTube plays

“Out of Time” now carries two names at the top of its release credits. The Weeknd and 亜蘭知子 — Tomoko Aran, the Japanese singer whose work forms the melodic spine of the track — have issued the song as an official joint single, formalizing a collaboration that millions of listeners had absorbed without knowing whose melody they were actually hearing.

Aran’s career belongs to the city pop era, the sophisticated, jazz-inflected urban sound that carried Japanese popular music through its commercial peak. Her track “I’m in Love” became the melodic foundation for “Out of Time,” but for much of the song’s streaming life, her contribution registered mainly with Japanese music enthusiasts and dedicated city pop scholars. The 16 million people who found the video on YouTube generally had no name to attach to what they were hearing.

City pop has since undergone a global re-evaluation, driven by algorithm-surfaced nostalgia on YouTube and streaming platforms. Tracks by artists including Mariya Takeuchi have accumulated tens of millions of plays from listeners far outside Japan, with a new generation encountering the genre with no memory of its original commercial context. When a song that samples or builds on the city pop catalogue reaches the mainstream through a globally recognized artist, the question of how credit flows — and how visible the originating artist becomes — carries weight that extends well beyond royalty paperwork.

The formal co-credit on this release is meaningful, but it does not automatically translate into name recognition for most of the people encountering the track. Tomoko Aran does not have the kind of platform infrastructure that turns a credit listing into a household name outside Japan: no current social media presence built for international audiences, no active touring circuit reaching the markets where The Weeknd operates. The Spotify listing and MusicBrainz record now carry both names, but the distance between receiving correct credit and being widely known by the listeners who benefit from that credit remains considerable.

“Out of Time” is available on Spotify under the joint Weeknd and Tomoko Aran listing. Whether that credit eventually reshapes how casual listeners think about what city pop actually contributed to the sounds they already know — or whether the algorithmic wave moves on before that conversation can take hold — is the question the release leaves open.
