The most valuable thing Rob Minkoff brings to his new employer is not a script or a slate but a reputation — one welded, for three decades, to hand-drawn family animation. A studio that has spent the past year as the lightning rod of Hollywood’s fight over artificial intelligence has just acquired the one asset no algorithm can synthesize: a filmmaker whose name carries genuine Disney pedigree.

As Deadline first reported, Minkoff — co-director of The Lion King and director of Stuart Little — is in advanced talks to develop and executive produce Storm Dogs, a family adventure feature for Particle 6. He would serve as creative lead, working alongside founder and chief executive Eline van der Velden on the story, characters and screenplay ahead of production.

Particle 6 is no ordinary animation start-up. It is the company behind Tilly Norwood, the AI “actor” it unveiled at the Zurich Summit to instant global controversy. When reports surfaced that talent agencies were circling the synthetic performer, the backlash was fierce: SAG-AFTRA denounced Norwood as “not an actor,” a construct with “no life experience to draw from,” assembled from the work of real performers who never gave their consent.

That is the context Minkoff walks into, and it is precisely why his signature matters to Particle 6. The Lion King remains the high-water mark of Disney’s hand-drawn era, and Stuart Little and The Haunted Mansion established him as a dependable steward of four-quadrant, all-ages storytelling. His involvement offers the company a human counterweight to the very reputation that has made it notorious — the pedigree of the drawn image set against the studio best known for trying to generate one.

The project itself is gentle enough. Built from an original idea by Van der Velden, Storm Dogs is set in an English village lashed by a violent storm: when two-year-old Poppy is separated from the adult minding her, five very different dogs must overcome their instincts, and one another, to carry her safely home. No cast, budget or release date has been attached, and the feature remains in early development.

The symbolism is almost too tidy. The director who once animated a lion cub’s road to adulthood is now being recruited to shepherd a pack of dogs — for the studio Hollywood has accused of trying to replace the very artists who would draw them.
