When two companies fold their streamers into one, only one executive gets to run the result. For Paramount Skydance and Warner Bros. Discovery, the choice was never going to be a shared throne: Cindy Holland and Casey Bloys are both top-tier streaming chiefs, and neither was ever going to report to the other. With Holland walking out of Paramount, David Ellison has made his pick, and he has chosen HBO’s continuity over the executive he personally recruited to design his streaming strategy.

As Deadline first reported, Holland, who served as Paramount Skydance’s Chair of Direct-to-Consumer, announced her exit in a memo to staff, effective immediately, after a week of rumours. The move leaves Bloys, Chairman and CEO of HBO and HBO Max Content, as the presumed head of the combined HBO Max and Paramount+ service that Ellison has promised once the acquisition closes. Holland spelled the logic out herself: “David is optimizing for HBO stability as we move into this next chapter, and I fully support that.”

Holland is the executive who, across nearly two decades at Netflix and nine years as VP of Original Content, built the streamer’s original programming strategy and shepherded House of Cards, Orange Is the New Black, BoJack Horseman, The Crown and The Queen’s Gambit. After leaving Netflix she ran Sister, the company founded by Elisabeth Murdoch and Jane Featherstone, as Global CEO for 15 months, before Ellison brought her in as an advisor and then put her in charge of Paramount+ and Pluto TV.

Her memo reads like a closing ledger: Paramount+ at an all-time subscriber high, the best retention in the service’s history, more than 40 new and returning series greenlit, and records for Landman, the most-watched series in Paramount+ history, and Dutton Ranch, its biggest original debut. She also helped lure Stranger Things creators the Duffer Brothers to a film and TV overall deal. Ellison called her “a force of nature whose impact on Paramount over the past year has been significant.”

The note also suggests WBD was on Ellison’s radar early. Holland writes that when she joined Ellison’s team in January 2025, the first of three goals was to “advise on the Warner Bros. Discovery acquisition”, months before Ellison’s first unsolicited offer for WBD in September 2025 and while Skydance was still clearing regulators on its Paramount deal. She became Chair of Direct-to-Consumer in August 2025.

Her departure puts her lieutenants in doubt, starting with Paramount+ Head of Originals Jane Wiseman, who followed Holland from Netflix and Sister. The pair had been steering a slate dominated by Taylor Sheridan dramas toward “female forward dramas”, beginning with Discretion, starring Nicole Kidman, which recently began production. Sheridan himself is moving to NBCUniversal in January 2029, while Bloys has signalled he wants his senior HBO team kept intact.

Holland leaves before the deal she helped plan has even closed, and she leaves endorsing it, writing that the combination of Paramount and Warner Bros. Discovery “serves the best interests of artists and audiences worldwide.”
