In a merger, the executive who wins the top job usually gets one more thing besides the title: time. Casey Bloys, the HBO chief David Ellison chose to run content for the combined company’s streaming business, now has a longer contract to go with his new role, and with it the runway to reshape a rival programming department he has just inherited.

As Deadline confirmed after the Ankler first reported it, Bloys has signed a multi-year extension to his existing Warner Bros. Discovery contract on the same day Skydance named him Co-Chair and Chief Content Officer of Skydance DTC. Renewals are standard practice at that level, but Deadline reads this one as part of the bargain behind Ellison’s decision to go with the HBO veteran over Cindy Holland, Paramount’s Chair of Direct-to-Consumer, in one of the most dramatic choices of the post-merger executive build-out.

The extension matters because of what comes next. Bloys will oversee content for both HBO Max and Paramount+, and he is expected to take some time to evaluate Holland’s programming team at Paramount+ before making personnel decisions. He is not arriving alone. Coming with him is the core of HBO’s creative leadership: head of drama Francesca Orsi, head of comedy Amy Gravitt, HBO Max head of originals Sarah Aubrey and communications chief Jeff Cusson. Like Bloys, Orsi, Gravitt and Cusson have each spent more than two decades at HBO.

That roster is the clearest signal yet of how the streaming unit will be run: by the people who built HBO’s current slate, while Paramount+’s existing programming executives wait for a verdict. When Holland announced her exit, she wrote that Ellison was “optimizing for HBO stability as we move into this next chapter.” A longer contract for Bloys and an intact HBO bench are what that stability looks like on an org chart. On the business side, he will sit beside JB Perrette, the Warner Bros. Discovery streaming veteran named Co-Chair and Chief Business Officer of Skydance DTC.

The track record is what Ellison is paying to keep. Bloys started at HBO in 2004 as a comedy executive, rose to head of comedy, became President of Programming in 2016, added original content for HBO Max in 2020 and was named Chairman and CEO of HBO and Max Content in 2022. His current contract runs through the end of 2027; Deadline did not report the length or terms of the extension.

The latest Emmys show what he carries across: HBO and HBO Max won 21 awards from 122 nominations, including Outstanding Drama Series for The Pitt and Outstanding Limited or Anthology Series for DTF St. Louis. The team behind those wins now gets to decide who programs Paramount+.
