Skydance keeps HBO Max and Paramount+ apart as Casey Bloys floats a Disney-style bundle

David Ellison’s naming video closed on the merged company’s crown jewels, and both streamers made the cut next to Warner Bros., DC and CNN

Every streaming merger eventually forces the same choice: one app or two. Warner Bros. Discovery once answered it by pouring HBO’s prestige library and Discovery’s reality catalogue into a single service called Max, then restored the HBO name to the app two years later. The company now absorbing Warner appears to be taking the opposite route: HBO Max and Paramount+ look set to survive the merger as distinct brands, tied together by a bundle rather than melted into one service.

As Deadline reported, the clearest signal so far came in the video in which Paramount CEO David Ellison revealed that the combined Paramount-Warner Bros. Discovery company will carry the name of his old one, Skydance. It closed on a slide that surrounded the new name with the logos positioned as the group’s most valuable brands: Paramount, Warner Bros., DC, CBS, CNN, Nickelodeon, and both HBO Max and Paramount+. With Paramount already on the slide, giving Paramount+ a tile of its own reads as deliberate, as does the choice of HBO Max over the legacy HBO mark.

The words had come a day earlier from Casey Bloys, Chairman and CEO of HBO and HBO Max Content, who is expected to oversee the merged streaming operation. Asked whether the two platforms, widely seen as complementary, would be bundled or fully integrated, he declined to commit but pointed to a precedent. “I don’t want to comment on what is going to happen or anything like that, but I would point to the HBO Max-Disney bundle, which has been very successful,” he said. “So, could you see something like that happening? That would make a lot of sense.”

The bundle Bloys cited sells Disney+, Hulu and HBO Max under one subscription while each service keeps its own app and identity. Applied in-house, the same logic would let HBO’s prestige drama and Paramount+’s mix of CBS series and Taylor Sheridan franchises be sold together without forcing two very different audiences into a single interface. It also fits the executive map Ellison has been drawing: Bloys became the presumed streaming chief when Cindy Holland, Paramount’s Chair of Direct-to-Consumer and the executive who had been running Paramount+, walked out days ago, writing that Ellison was “optimizing for HBO stability.”

Paramount has not officially confirmed how it will combine HBO Max and Paramount+. The company becomes Skydance on Oct. 6, when the Warner Bros. Discovery acquisition is set to close, and until then Ellison’s brand slide is the closest thing to an answer.

On that slide, Paramount, the name Ellison is retiring from the corporate masthead, is reduced to one tile among eight, and the streamer that carries it earned a tile of its own.
