OpenAI put a Wayfair agent inside ChatGPT — it helps you, then sells to you

ChatGPT has always presented itself as a tool with no stake in the outcome: search, compare, recommend, and let the user decide. OpenAI has now changed that. A format called Sponsored Agents lets brands run their own AI inside ChatGPT conversations, labeled as sponsored, built by the brand, and incentivized to convert.

When a user’s question or search touches a relevant category, a labeled Sponsored Agent result can appear in the conversation. Tapping it opens a separate chat with the brand’s own AI, which is trained to handle product questions, narrow choices, and guide the user toward a purchase. Wayfair’s agent answers detailed furniture questions. Angi’s agent connects users to local contractors. Both are separated from the main ChatGPT conversation and marked as sponsored, but neither is neutral in its recommendations.

OpenAI called the launch “reimagining advertising with AI” and positioned Sponsored Agents as more helpful than banner ads or search-result links because a conversation is more useful than a click. The technical structure is intent-driven: agents appear only when the topic is relevant, which OpenAI argues makes them less intrusive than conventional display formats. HubSpot joined as the first CRM integration, allowing sales teams to follow up after the ChatGPT conversation ends, and Shopify as the first ecommerce partner for a parallel ChatGPT Ads product.

The design raises a structural problem that the label does not resolve. A brand’s AI agent is trained by the brand, guardrailed by the brand, and optimized for the brand’s conversion goals — which is the opposite of what users expect from a ChatGPT answer. OpenAI says the conversations are clearly labeled and kept separate from the user’s main context window. But “sponsored” has never reliably been decoded as “this AI is trying to sell to you” by ad consumers on any platform that has tried the label. The more substantive question is whether Sponsored Agents serve OpenAI’s revenue better than they serve users — and that is a question OpenAI has already answered for itself by launching.

OpenAI has not announced pricing for Sponsored Agents or a timeline for the test to leave its pilot phase. The broader ChatGPT Ads expansion also includes natural-language campaign tools and creative AI utilities for advertisers — layers being built in parallel. The next wave of brand partners has not been named. What is already clear is that OpenAI, which built its user base by positioning ChatGPT as an alternative to ad-driven search, has now built a direct competitor to Google‘s advertising network, assembled from inside the very conversations it trained users to treat as unbiased.
