OpenAI is an artificial-intelligence research company based in San Francisco. Founded in 2015, it develops the GPT family of large language models and the ChatGPT assistant, and pursues the goal of building artificial general intelligence that benefits all of humanity.

Created first as a non-profit and later restructured around a capped-profit model, the company is led by chief executive Sam Altman. Its releases have repeatedly set the pace of the consumer AI market.
