Halo: Campaign Evolved lands on PS5 with Halo’s lowest Metacritic score in 25 years

Master Chief arrived on a PlayStation console for the first time in franchise history, and the score attached to his arrival tells a partial story. Halo: Campaign Evolved carries an 81 on Metacritic — the franchise’s lowest aggregate since the series began — but that number obscures a meaningful split: the Xbox Series X version sits at 85, the PlayStation 5 version at 80, and the PC release at 77, burdened by stuttering, crash reports, and mandatory sign-in requirements that locked players out of offline play.

The game is a full remake of Halo: Combat Evolved, the 2001 first-person shooter that defined the original Xbox console and established the template for the modern console shooter. Halo Studios (the developer formerly known as 343 Industries, renamed in 2023) rebuilt the entire campaign in Unreal Engine 5. Level layouts and narrative structure remain largely intact; geometry, lighting, cinematics, and controls are new. The result plays with the deliberate pacing of a 25-year-old design: large explorable environments, methodical enemy encounters, and grenade physics that now let ordinance roll convincingly down Flood-infested staircases.

Beyond the original ten missions, Campaign Evolved adds three new levels featuring Master Chief and Sergeant Johnson set before the events of the 2001 game. The bonus content functions as a prequel, expanding backstory that the original handled mostly in passing dialogue. Skulls — gameplay modifiers borrowed from the series’ later entries — let players toggle altered enemy behavior, modified physics, and visual effects. Some combinations produce genuinely different combat encounters. All are optional.

The PlayStation 5 launch is the franchise’s first appearance on a Sony platform. For two decades, Halo operated as an Xbox-exclusive argument. Microsoft‘s multiplatform strategy has moved several formerly Xbox-exclusive franchises to competing hardware; it reached its most symbolically charged moment here: the game that sold the original Xbox now appears on the PlayStation Store. Cross-play and cross-progression are fully supported between Xbox Series X/S, PC, and PS5.

The PC version’s difficulties account for much of the critical friction. Launch coverage documented consistent stuttering on hardware well above the recommended specifications, crash-to-desktop instances during cutscenes, and a mandatory sign-in requirement that prevented offline play entirely. Patches followed, but the PC score stabilized at 77. The always-online requirement, which affects all three platforms, drew sustained criticism independent of the technical issues.

Strip the PC problems and the connectivity policy from the aggregate, and critics’ descriptions of the campaign converge: the Silent Cartographer mission and the Library translate into UE5 without the 2001 release’s graphical limitations flattening their spatial logic. The three new prequel missions add material weight to Johnson’s character, a detail that the franchise’s longstanding audience will notice. The 81 reflects the whole package. The campaign Halo Studios rebuilt would score higher on its own terms.

Halo: Campaign Evolved is available on Xbox Series X/S, PC via Steam and the Windows Store, and PlayStation 5. It is included with Game Pass. The franchise’s first decade averaged between 87 and 97 on Metacritic. Whether the next entry recovers that range — or whether always-online requirements and multiplatform ambitions continue to compress what was once a universally approved score — is the question the 81 does not resolve.
