Nonolith wants you to break its puzzles with tools you’ve had since the first minute

There is a kind of game that does not hand you new powers so much as reveal the ones you were already holding. Players have taken to calling it the metroidbrainia, a cousin of the metroidvania in which locked doors open with understanding instead of upgrades, and its lineage runs through Outer Wilds, Tunic and Animal Well. Nonolith, the puzzle game from developer Justcamh and publisher Inner Pocket, belongs squarely to that tradition, and its new gameplay trailer, released as part of The MIX Showcase, makes the case by refusing to explain too much.

The premise is a prison you can edit. The player is trapped inside the Nonolith, a vast structure the developer describes as living, and the toolset reads like the vocabulary of a desktop rather than an arsenal: copy, paste, move, rotate, destroy. Pieces of the world can be lifted and set down elsewhere to build a bridge, carved out to dig a tunnel, or deleted to break through a wall. The design argument, repeated in the announcement and on the game’s store page, is that nothing unlocks. The tricks that matter late were possible from the very beginning.

That is the most interesting promise here, and the riskiest. In the announcement, the developer frames it as seemingly simple mechanics that reveal new uses as players uncover what was possible all along. A game built this way lives or dies on the moment a player realizes that a rule they have leaned on for an hour means something else entirely, and the trailer is cut to tease exactly those moments: secrets, spells and unexpected interactions sitting in plain view until the player learns how to read them.

The structure supports the idea. Nonolith is split across nine worlds that can be tackled in any order, and Justcamh insists there is no wrong way to play, since every path can eventually lead out. Escape, however, is not the finish line. Players who keep digging will find game-spanning puzzles, hidden interactions and what the release calls world-shattering secrets about what the Nonolith really is, a second layer the genre’s best entries have taught audiences to expect. The store page describes a compact experience, scored with an atmospheric soundtrack by the composer Clockmaker.

Nonolith is coming to PC via Steam, where the listing points to the fourth quarter of 2026; no exact release date has been announced. A demo is available now on Steam for anyone who wants to start poking at the walls.

For a game whose whole pitch is that the answer has been in your hands since the first screen, a demo is the fairest possible test. It cannot show you everything Nonolith hides. It can only show you whether you are the kind of player who notices.
