Infested DX takes Shadowgate’s die-often design to a derelict starship in 16-bit

GrahfMetal's itch.io cult horror returns rebuilt, on the old MacVenture rule that every death teaches you something

There is a particular kind of cruelty that only the old MacVenture games understood. Shadowgate, Déjà Vu and Uninvited handed you a window, a list of verbs and an inventory, then killed you for touching the wrong thing, and somehow that made every room feel dangerous in a way modern adventures rarely attempt. Jeff Canam, the solo developer who works as GrahfMetal, has spent years inside that grammar. Infested DX is his attempt to carry it aboard a dying starship and make it bigger, sharper and stranger than the first time he tried.

The premise is classic isolation horror. You wake as the only survivor on a derelict ship, infected by whatever wiped out the crew, and you need three things before it finishes you: a cure, a route home and an explanation. The store page promises zombies, mutants, robots and unseen alien pathogens, and the screenshots deliver decomposing bodies in spacesuits, red-lit airlocks and excursions onto alien worlds painted in bruise purple, all framed by a chunky retro interface of verbs, maps and inventory slots.

What makes it worth watching is the design philosophy rather than the setting. Like its models, Infested DX treats death as a teaching tool. One wrong move ends you, but publisher Komi Games says you never lose progress when you die, which turns every fatal mistake into an invitation to experiment. It is the MacVenture contract with the frustration filed off: punish curiosity theatrically, reward it mechanically. Inventory crafting adds a second layer, asking players to combine what they scavenge rather than simply hoard it.

The “DX” carries some history. Infested first appeared in 2016 as an 8-bit game on itch.io, a small cult favorite styled after the NES versions of those Mac adventures. Since then Canam has worked on the real thing: he was the artist on Beyond Shadowgate, the 2024 sequel to the NES Shadowgate, published by Zojoi from a design that had sat in the vault for decades. Infested DX is the return trip, rebuilt from the ground up with a 16-bit pixel art overhaul, new content and the quality-of-life changes the original never had.

The scope is deliberately modest. Komi Games describes a focused campaign of around three hours, which suits a genre that runs on tension rather than length. The old MacVentures were short too; they only felt endless because you kept dying, and that is precisely the feeling Canam is chasing.

Infested DX launches on PC via Steam on October 27, priced at $9.99. The publisher has been offering a playable demo through October’s Steam Next Fest for anyone who wants to test their luck in the corridors first. For the small, devoted audience that followed Beyond Shadowgate, the pitch needs no translation: a lot of deaths, and a lot of reasons to keep clicking.
