Voice actor Matt Mercer becomes the smiling puppet boss of Mr Magpie’s Harmless Card Game

Horror has long understood that the most frightening voice is the one that stays polite. Mr Magpie’s Harmless Card Game is built on that idea: a stitched puppet in a red cardigan sits across a card table, sets your quota for a pharmaceutical company and insists, with a fixed grin, that nothing in the building is dangerous. The puppet does not need many words. Giant Light Studios has now revealed who supplies the few he has, along with the mumbles and bloodcurdling noises in between: Matt Mercer, the voice actor behind some of the most recognisable villains in modern games.

The reveal came in a new trailer shown during the ID@Xbox x IGN Showcase, and the studio wrapped it in the game’s own corporate fiction. In the announcement, Sunbright Pharmaceuticals, the company whose offices the game takes place in, welcomes Mercer to its executive team “following an exhaustive recruitment process”. His official responsibility is the vocal performance behind Mr Magpie; every other duty, the memo adds, remains confidential. It is the right joke for this game, which turns the language of HR notices into a source of dread.

The casting is the kind of coup indie horror rarely lands. Mercer’s recent credits read like a gallery of antagonists and oddballs: Ganondorf in The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom, Vincent Valentine in Final Fantasy VII Rebirth, Minsc in Baldur’s Gate 3 and Vecna in Dead by Daylight. That last role doubles as a family connection. Behaviour Interactive, the Montréal company behind Dead by Daylight, co-publishes Mr Magpie through its Miss Behaviour label alongside Gambit Digital, so the voice of one of its horror icons now belongs to the smaller deckbuilder it has taken under its wing.

Underneath the puppet theatre, the design is unchanged, and it remains the sharpest idea here: Minesweeper rewired as office politics. Each round you flip cards for cash, read hint cards to work out where the lethal JERRY cards are hiding, exploit strange synergies and chase increasingly absurd multipliers to make quota before closing time. It is push-your-luck gambling on top of a roguelike deck, and the release is clear about the cost of falling short: termination, of the permanent kind. A performer who can make a mumble sound like a threat is exactly what that loop needs at the other side of the table.

The second announcement widens the office. Previously announced for PC via Steam, Mr Magpie’s Harmless Card Game is now also coming to Xbox Series X|S, PlayStation 5 and Nintendo Switch 2. It will be available on Xbox Game Pass from day one, with Xbox Play Anywhere support. The launch is set for early 2027, which the Steam store page lists as the first quarter of 2027. A free demo is available now on Steam for anyone who wants to report for duty early.

A villain needs a voice before it needs a face. Mr Magpie already had the face; now the smile has someone behind it.
