Ananta Arrives January 15, 2027 — Characters Are Free, Cosmetics Aren’t

The question that followed Project Mugen through every preview was whether it would arrive as another gacha-driven character collector or something structurally different. With ANANTA’s official launch window confirmed for January 15, 2027, that question has an answer: every playable character in the roster unlocks through story progression, quest chains, and exploration. No gacha. No banners.

ANANTA is developed by Naked Rain and published by NetEase Games. The project spent several years under the working title Project Mugen, accumulating a dedicated following through closed tests and extended preview campaigns. At Gamescom 2026, the studio confirmed the rebrand, announced the global launch date, and disclosed a detail that substantially changed the map players had been planning around: a second full city at launch.

The primary setting is Nova City, a modern metropolis where paranormal disruptions — grouped under the in-game term Chaos — surface without warning across civilian life. Players lead the Anti-Chaos Directorate (A.C.D.), a specialized unit that investigates and contains these events. Nova City covers the kinds of urban environments now standard for the genre: a downtown grid with vertical height, coastal districts, underground systems. What was not anticipated until Gamescom was Chongxiao, a second city that mirrors and contrasts Nova City’s aesthetic, giving launch-day players two distinct maps rather than one that expands through content updates.

Combat relies on team switching between operatives during active encounters, with each character carrying a defined move-set. The environment is explicitly treated as a weapon: NPCs can be used as improvised tools, street infrastructure can be turned against threats. Outside of combat, the game runs a simulation layer that drives NPC behavior — routines, ambient reactions to time and weather, population density shifts. Traversal adds skateboards, bicycles, and parkour alongside conventional vehicles. The Gamescom demo extended the preview window players have had to evaluate whether these systems function under real conditions rather than curated showcase footage.

The monetization structure is the clearest point of differentiation from the genre ANANTA occupies. In most comparable free-to-play action RPGs, character acquisition is the primary revenue engine: limited banners, probability rates, seasonal releases. ANANTA has stated that every playable character unlocks through in-game progression. Revenue is generated through cosmetic purchases: clothing, vehicles, and customization items. There is also a Battle Pass with 120 progression levels and its own dedicated quest line. The ceiling on free character acquisition is the commitment that carries the most weight; how it holds as the game scales into year two and three is an open question the studio will eventually need to answer publicly.

At launch, the content volume is projected at over 100 hours of main and side material. The studio has publicly committed to a minimum seven-year support window. DLSS 4.5 integration and ray tracing are listed as post-launch additions for PC. These projections come with the standard live-service caveats, but the specificity of seven years and 100 hours is notable for a title that is not charging players for entry.

ANANTA releases globally on January 15, 2027, across PC (available through Steam and a standalone launcher), PlayStation 5, iOS, and Android. Pre-registration is open through the official website at anantagame.com. The game launches as a free-to-play title with no announced premium access tier.
