The song that changed Max Herre’s life was one he could not finish on his own. Freundeskreis, the Stuttgart band he fronted, had a track called Mit Dir and needed a woman’s voice for it. The singer he found was Joy Denalane. The duet went into the German top ten, she became his wife, and their two careers have been tangled together ever since. For a rapper who helped teach German hip hop to talk about history and politics, it is an odd centre of gravity: the widest audience he ever reached came for the love songs.

Herre has never settled that contradiction, and he seems to have stopped trying. He has been a band leader, a solo star with two number-one albums, a producer who stepped back to build someone else’s records, a coach on prime-time television and a pianist in a jazz group. His most recent chapter folded all of it into a first album made as a couple. Then it brought him to the hardest role of his career, the musician who had to cancel his own tour and stay home to get well.

He grew up in Stuttgart, the city where he was born on April 22, 1973, as the grandson of Richard Herre, an architect and graphic designer; decades later Max sat on the advisory board of an exhibition about his grandfather’s work. By his own account he was a lazy pupil who had to repeat two school years before finishing at the Schickhardt-Gymnasium. After civilian service he enrolled to study English and German, went to the university for a single day and never returned. Music had already won. Hearing the Heidelberg group Advanced Chemistry convinced him that rap could be made in German. He formed his first band, Seedless Jam, at fifteen, then the project Agit Jazz with the producer Don Philippe. In 1993 the two added the DJ and producer DJ Friction so they could play live, calling the outfit Maximilian und sein Freundeskreis, and in the same year Herre helped found the Stuttgart collective Kolchose.

Renamed Freundeskreis, the trio signed in 1997 to Four Music, the label set up by Die Fantastischen Vier. The breakthrough came almost at once. A-N-N-A, paired on a single with Leg dein Ohr auf die Schiene der Geschichte, reached No. 6 in Germany and sold more than 250,000 copies, and the debut album Quadratur des Kreises followed. The band described itself as conscious rap and refused the usual two turntables and a microphone, touring with live musicians instead. Esperanto, the second album, reached No. 3 and sold more than 300,000 copies, carried by Mit Dir. Herre then gathered more than fifteen artists, among them Gentleman, Afrob, Sékou and Denalane, as the FK Allstars, played Rock am Ring, Rock im Park and splash! to crowds of up to 70,000, and recorded the live double album En Directo. After that tour he left the band he had invented.

What came next looked like a retreat. With fame growing and his first son born in 2001, Herre stepped away from the spotlight, moved to Berlin and spent his time producing Denalane’s debut, Mamani. It reached the German top ten in 2002 and earned three Echo nominations. He produced her second album, Born & Raised, in 2006, the same year the couple and two partners founded the label Nesola.

His own solo debut, Max Herre, arrived in 2004 and went to No. 1 in Germany, a record that mixed hip hop with soul, reggae and rock. Ein geschenkter Tag followed in 2009. Hallo Welt!, in 2012, gave him a second No. 1, and its single Wolke 7, a duet with Philipp Poisel, became the first top-ten hit under his own name. In 2013 he joined The Voice of Germany as a coach, and his singer Andreas Kümmert won the season. That December he released MTV Unplugged Kahedi Radio Show, becoming only the third German hip-hop act in the series after Die Fantastischen Vier and Sido. Built partly from Freundeskreis songs, it reached No. 2, went platinum and won him the 2014 Echo for national hip hop and urban act.

The softer turn has not always been forgiven. In 2012, during the taping of the talk show Roche & Böhmermann, Herre walked off the set after criticism from the host Charlotte Roche; she brought him back and the recording went on. Athen, his first solo album in seven years, came out in 2019 with guests including Trettmann, Megaloh and Dirk von Lowtzow, and its title single used Autotune. The website laut.de reported that comment sections had caught fire over the move and judged much of the record “vibe instead of substance”, while still calling the title track a genuinely pretty piece of music. One song, 17. September, is addressed to his father, who worked in Greece for many years. The album reached No. 9, well below his two number ones. Herre’s own taste helps explain the drift. He names Udo Lindenberg as his strongest influence and calls himself a big fan of East German rock from the late 1960s and 1970s, saying he feels “the music, the bands, the recording technology” were more developed in the East than in the West at the time.

The side projects of the last few years point the same way. In 2021 he released Mir kann nichts passieren with Danger Dan, and the album WebMax with Roberto Di Gioia’s group Web Web, sitting at the piano with them at JazzBaltica in 2022. WebMax II followed in 2023, with Marja Burchard among the players.

Then came the record many fans had waited a quarter of a century to hear. Alles Liebe, the first joint album by Herre and Denalane, came out on November 1, 2024, a double album of 22 songs about the daily life of a long relationship. It reached No. 5 in Germany, and the winter tour that followed came close to selling out. The summer of 2025 went differently. Shows in Jena, Tettnang and Aachen were cancelled at short notice, and on September 3 Herre called off every remaining concert of the year. “Unfortunately my health does not allow me to stand on stage for you together with Joy and our wonderful band,” he wrote. He said his doctor had urged him to take time off to stabilise his mental health, and that he hoped to be back in the new year.

He kept that promise. For Record Store Day, on April 18, 2026, the FK Allstars’ En Directo returned on vinyl, a quarter of a century after its first release. In the summer the couple were back on the open-air circuit, including the main stage of Das Fest in Karlsruhe on July 26.

Herre and Denalane married after meeting on Mit Dir and have two sons, born in 2001 and 2003. They separated in 2007 and have been together again since 2011. Herre also has a daughter, born in 2008, to whom he dedicated the song Vida on Hallo Welt!. Freundeskreis said goodbye with a concert at Stuttgart’s Gazi-Stadion in September 2007 and returned to the stage in June 2017.

The next date is a jazz stage. On November 7, 2026, Herre and Denalane bring Alles Liebe to the Forum Leverkusen as part of the 47th Leverkusener Jazztage, the man who once refused the turntables still looking for the room where his songs fit best.
