Heather McMahan, the Atlanta comic who got canceled by golf and put it in a Hulu special

At the first tee of the Ryder Cup, microphone in hand, in front of a grandstand packed with American fans, Heather McMahan joined a chant she says she did not start and could not take back. Within a day the PGA of America announced that she had apologized to Rory McIlroy and would not return to the job. For most performers that would be the end of the story. For McMahan it became material, because turning the worst week of her life into something a room can laugh at is her entire method, and it was her method long before golf.

It was born in grief. When her father died of cancer one week after he was diagnosed, McMahan was a struggling performer with a theatre degree and years of improv behind her. In the dark months that followed she began posting to Instagram Stories, often late at night and, by her own account, often after several glasses of Chardonnay, writing bits in fifteen-second bursts. The replies came mostly from women thanking her for saying out loud what they had been living through quietly. Her agents put a tour on sale to see what the numbers would do. She has said it sold out in about ten minutes.

That audience found a comic who had been training for years without a break. Heather McMahan grew up in Atlanta, Georgia, where she was born on March 15, 1987, the daughter of a larger-than-life father and of Robin, a mother who would eventually become part of the act. She studied at the University of Mississippi, joined the Delta Gamma sorority and graduated in 2009 with a fine arts degree in theatre. New York came next, then Los Angeles. She worked the front desk at SoulCycle and waited tables in Hell’s Kitchen while, as she later told The Hollywood Reporter, trying to compete with every hipster in Brooklyn for a spot at the Upright Citizens Brigade, the improv and sketch theatre she worked her way through before stand-up.

Stand-up won her over because, in her words, she could say whatever she wanted. Improv had given her reflexes; Instagram gave her a laboratory with instant results. On stage she became a physical performer who lunges, kicks and sprints across the boards in glitter suits and feathers, closer to an old-school showman than to the stool-and-microphone school of confessional comedy. Her catchphrase, “thick neck, thin ankles,” comes from the same instinct: the body as punchline, delivered before anyone else can make the joke.

On July 3, 2019, she launched Absolutely Not with the Dear Media network, a weekly podcast in which she works through friend breakups, punishing celery-juice regimes and family chaos with the energy of a long phone call. By 2024 Deadline was reporting more than 400,000 monthly downloads. That same July a call came from NBC’s Today: Maria Shriver, who followed McMahan on Instagram, had suggested her as a guest co-host for the fourth hour alongside Jenna Bush Hager. She flew overnight to New York, and she has been back on the show regularly ever since.

When the pandemic stopped touring, McMahan and her husband moved into her mother’s house in Atlanta, an arrangement meant to be temporary that turned into a creative reset. “My humor became a lot more relatable,” she told The Hollywood Reporter. Robin McMahan, who had competed on the first season of MasterChef, became a recurring character in her daughter’s stories. She read with Heather at the audition that landed her a role in the Netflix Christmas comedy Love Hard (2021), opposite Nina Dobrev and Jimmy O. Yang, and McMahan has said she got the part partly because the director thought her mother was “so insane.”

Those months also pushed her toward fertility treatment. Her facetiously named Farewell Tour built a long section around a botched attempt at egg freezing, with the suppositories, the testosterone shots and months of cycles that in the end produced a single embryo. She told The Hollywood Reporter that saying all of that on stage felt more exposed than talking about her father’s death. It was the Instagram formula moved into a theatre: the private ordeal narrated in full, with the punchline arriving before the pity can.

She self-produced her first hour rather than wait for a network to say yes, a lesson she had learned the hard way after a sitcom pilot she spent a long stretch developing for Peacock was passed on. She shot it at the Lexington Opera House in Kentucky, a Southern room small enough to see faces, with her friend Jen Zaborowski directing, and then shopped the finished film herself. Netflix bought it; she took the news, she says, after climbing out of the wine cellar of an Italian trattoria. Son I Never Had premiered on October 17, 2023, with Robin in the opening sequence and material on TikTok therapy, joking through her father’s eulogy and reaching her “emergency weight.” It debuted at number four on Netflix and held a top-ten spot for seven days.

The second hour turned the jokes on her marriage. Breadwinner, filmed over two sold-out nights at Atlanta’s Fox Theatre, where she closed The Comeback Tour, reached Hulu on October 11, 2024. It is built on the pressure of being the family’s main earner, life as a golf widow, a wedding that blew through its budget, and the in-laws. The husband at the centre of it is Jeff Daniels, a consultant who shares his name with the actor, whom she met at a gay bar in New York. They married in a civil ceremony on December 21, 2020, and celebrated again on June 24, 2022, at the Villa Medicea di Lilliano in Tuscany.

The golf-widow jokes acquired a sequel nobody planned. On September 27, 2025, McMahan was the master of ceremonies at the first tee at Bethpage Black on Long Island, hired to warm up the home crowd before the 7:10 a.m. start of the Ryder Cup’s second day. Video showed her joining a profane chant against Rory McIlroy into her microphone. The PGA of America said she had apologized to McIlroy and to Ryder Cup Europe and had stepped down from the first tee. Europe went on to win 15 to 13, and McIlroy described the crowd’s behaviour that week as unacceptable and abusive.

Her own account was more complicated than the headlines. She wrote that she had not started the chant but deeply regretted “responding back to the crowd,” and called the way the blame landed on her “a little Salem-witch esque” given the conduct of thousands of spectators. The uncomfortable truth sits between the two readings. The reflex to answer a crowd is precisely the skill that got her hired, and at a sporting event with children in the stands it was the wrong reflex. The episode also tested the persona she had spent a decade building, the woman who says the unsayable, in front of an audience that had never agreed to that contract.

Between tours she has built a television presence on the edges of prime time: appearances on Is It Cake? and The Great American Baking Show: Celebrity Edition, a first-round win on Celebrity Jeopardy! against Cynthia Nixon and Cedric the Entertainer, and red-carpet co-hosting for E!’s Live from the Red Carpet at the Emmys, the Grammys and the Oscars. A scripted comedy based on her family, which she was writing and producing for NBC in 2022, has not reached the screen, and that is part of why she keeps releasing her stand-up through her own company, Absolutely Not Productions.

Her third special, By a Thread, premieres on Hulu on October 16, 2026. It was taped over two sold-out nights at the Bijou Theatre in Knoxville, Tennessee, at the end of The Bamboozled Tour, her third national tour, and it takes on what Deadline summarised as being canceled by golf, her husband’s kidney stones and having her neck done twice. Zaborowski directs again. Deadline also pointed out that McMahan is one of the rare comics to have placed each of her first three specials with a premium streamer, all of them self-produced.

A tour date at the Venetian in Las Vegas on October 10 lands six days before the special, and in May 2027 she sets sail again with Absolutely Knot!, her second comedy cruise, aboard the Norwegian Jewel. The formula has not changed since the Instagram Stories: whatever went wrong this year is next year’s hour.
