The version of Billy Ray Cyrus that most people carry around — the mullet, the hip-swaying moves, the county-fair line dancers — stopped being an accurate description of him sometime around the time he walked onto the Hannah Montana set. What replaced it is harder to pin down: a television actor, a country patriarch, a rapper’s most famous sample, and, after a personal catastrophe that played out in front of a watching audience, a man who made the record he probably should have made ten years earlier. Three decades of narrative revision and he is still at it.

He grew up in Flatwoods, a small city in Greenup County, Kentucky, in a family where music was less a career choice than an inheritance. His grandfather and father both played; he picked up a guitar in his teens and spent several years working through clubs in Ohio and Kentucky before Mercury Records came calling in 1991. The offer arrived at the right moment. The country music boom of the early nineties was about to reward artists who could fuse Nashville craftsmanship with an authentic working-class identity — and Cyrus, then thirty, fit that brief in a way that no amount of marketing could have manufactured.

The debut album Some Gave All, released in 1992, sold nine million copies in its first twelve months — a figure that made it the best-selling debut on the Billboard 200 up to that point. The single «Achy Breaky Heart» preceded it, went to number one on the country charts, ignited a line-dancing craze that spread well beyond Nashville, and became the first song to achieve triple platinum status in Australia. It also attached to Cyrus a designation he would spend the next three decades peeling off: the one-hit wonder.

The second and third albums charted respectably, and a 1997 collaboration with Wynonna Judd on «Romeo» earned a Grammy nomination for Best Country Vocal Collaboration. But the industry’s relationship with him had cooled. Radio moved on. The scale of Some Gave All had been so outsized that almost anything Cyrus released afterward could be measured against it and found lacking, which is a particular kind of trap the music business has no standard mechanism for escaping.

His exit came not through a new record deal but through television. Doc, a family medical drama in which he starred from 2001 to 2004, kept him visible during an era when country radio was no longer the automatic gateway to national relevance. Then Hannah Montana arrived in 2006, and suddenly the artist once shelved as a novelty was sharing a screen family with a daughter who would become one of the defining voices of a generation. Playing Robby Ray Stewart — patient, guitar-strumming, occasionally oblivious — suited him in ways that extended beyond performance into something close to typecasting as the good-natured American father figure. The show ran until 2011 and introduced Cyrus to an audience that had not been born when Some Gave All first shipped.

The 2019 collaboration with Lil Nas X on «Old Town Road» deserves its own paragraph because its cultural function went beyond a career resurgence. By the time Cyrus appeared on the remix, the original song was already a streaming phenomenon; what his presence added was a question the country music establishment had been avoiding — about genre, race, and who gets to claim which tradition. The song stayed at number one on the Hot 100 for nineteen consecutive weeks, a record at the time. It won two Grammy Awards: Best Pop Duo/Group Performance and Best Music Video. It was also nominated for Record of the Year. The man who had been written off in 1993 was, in 2019, the most-charted act in country music history by weeks at number one.

The years between that peak and the album he released in June 2026 were not uncomplicated. His thirty-year marriage to Tish Finley ended in divorce in 2022. In October 2023 he married the Australian singer known as Firerose; seven months later he filed for divorce, listing fraud and unauthorized charges of nearly a hundred thousand dollars as grounds. Firerose disputed his account and alleged that the filing came one day before her scheduled double mastectomy for a BRCA1 mutation. The divorce was finalized in August 2024. Neither version of events has been adjudicated in a way that settles the factual record, and the family relationships caught in the fallout took additional months to recover. Cyrus himself described reaching a low point, and photographs from that period show someone who had moved a significant distance from the self-assurance of the Stagecoach generation.

The Hill, released on June 16, 2026, is his first solo album in fourteen years. He co-produced it with his son Braison and it features a duet with his daughter Noah Cyrus, «On Our Way Along,» which brought all three on stage together at the Stagecoach festival that spring. Cyrus has described the record as his «Johnny Cash moment» — the stripped-back late-career statement that trades ambition for honesty. Whether that framing serves the music or sells it short is for listeners to judge; what is harder to dispute is that the album was made in circumstances that gave it a weight his earlier work rarely needed to carry.

He is reported to be in a relationship with actress Elizabeth Hurley, who was photographed alongside him at Stagecoach 2026. He has six children in total — Miley, Braison, and Noah with Tish Finley, two adopted stepchildren Brandi and Trace, and Christopher Cody from an earlier relationship. Miley, whose own career has long since overtaken his in commercial scale, was photographed with him at the family’s Tennessee farm in May 2025 — the kind of image that suggests a distance has been bridged without announcing exactly what it cost to bridge it.

With The Hill already in circulation and a Stagecoach set behind him, the question is less whether Cyrus can still perform than whether country music has finally made peace with a figure it spent decades alternately embracing and dismissing. The audience at Stagecoach seemed to have settled the matter on its own terms.
