Aaron Paul and the long escape from Breaking Bad’s Jesse Pinkman

Aaron Paul was written to die. Jesse Pinkman, the burned-out small-time dealer who cooks methamphetamine with his former chemistry teacher in Breaking Bad, was meant to be a casualty of the first season, a lesson for Walter White about the price of the trade. Vince Gilligan changed the plan after watching what happened whenever Paul shared a scene with Bryan Cranston. The reprieve made his career. It also handed him the question he has been answering ever since: what an actor does after the part that saved him refuses to let go.

The distance he covered to get there is part of the story. He was born Aaron Paul Sturtevant in Emmett, Idaho, the youngest of four children of Darla Sturtevant and Robert Sturtevant, a Baptist minister. He arrived a month early, in his parents’ bathroom, and his first stage was the church play.

That was August 27, 1979. After finishing at Centennial High School in Boise in 1997, he drove to Los Angeles in a 1982 Toyota Corolla with his mother in the passenger seat and $6,000 in savings. He worked as a cinema usher at Universal Studios and turned up as a contestant on The Price Is Right, where he overbid on the Showcase by $132 and lost.

The next decade was an ordinary apprenticeship: commercials, a music video for Korn, single episodes of The X-Files and Veronica Mars, a bit part in Mission: Impossible III. The first recurring character that stuck was Scott Quittman, across fourteen episodes of HBO’s Big Love.

Breaking Bad ran from 2008 to 2013, and Jesse became its conscience by default: the one character who absorbed the damage Walter caused and, unlike Walter, felt all of it. Paul won the Primetime Emmy for Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Drama Series three times, in 2010, 2012 and 2014, and was nominated in 2009 and 2013 as well. On the last day of filming he and Cranston both got Breaking Bad tattoos; his reads “no half measures”. The friendship outlived the show. The two launched a mezcal brand, Dos Hombres, in 2019, and Cranston is godfather to Paul’s son.

Hollywood’s reading of that success was that Paul should become a movie star, and the first attempt went badly. Need for Speed, the 2014 adaptation of the racing game franchise, was built around him as a street racer out for revenge. It earned $203 million worldwide and some of the harshest reviews of his career, with a 23 percent approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes, and no sequel followed. The same year he played the drunken father of two young vandals opposite Juliette Lewis in the small drama Hellion. The lesson still holds: Paul is at his most interesting when nobody asks him to carry a franchise, as with his drone pilot in Eye in the Sky, and above all on television.

That is where the real escape from Jesse happened. For six seasons of BoJack Horseman he voiced Todd Chavez, the couch-surfing optimist who comes out as asexual, and served as an executive producer; he later said he was proud to represent that community. In Hulu‘s The Path he played Eddie Lane, a father who joins a cult and then begins to doubt it. He spent a season opposite Octavia Spencer in Apple TV+‘s Truth Be Told and two more as Caleb Nichols in HBO’s Westworld, the series that first put him in a room with Jonathan Nolan and Lisa Joy.

He never walked away from Jesse completely, and that is the tension critics tend to skip. In 2019 he returned for El Camino: A Breaking Bad Movie, which Gilligan wrote and directed for Netflix and which Paul also produced, and in 2022 he appeared in the final season of Better Call Saul. The film gave Jesse the ending the series had withheld. It also confirmed, a decade after the finale, that the character was still the strongest card in Paul’s hand.

A more revealing choice came from Charlie Brooker. Paul had voiced a cameo in the Black Mirror episode USS Callister on one condition: that it would not rule him out of a proper role later, since the anthology almost never casts an actor twice. The proper role arrived with Beyond the Sea in 2023, as an astronaut on a years-long mission who lives with his family on Earth through a replica of his own body, opposite Josh Hartnett and Kate Mara, and who in the episode’s second half is also Hartnett’s character occupying that replica. Paul has said the series pushed him to cut back on technology to the point of not owning a computer.

That makes his recent run faintly absurd, because his largest new audience in years came through a screen. In Dispatch, AdHoc Studio’s superhero workplace comedy released in weekly episodes from October 2025, he voices Robert Robertson III, a hero without powers whose mechanical suit has been destroyed and who ends up working a dispatcher’s desk. The game has sold more than four million copies. A few months later, at Mobile World Congress in Barcelona in March 2026, he shared a stage with Light Phone’s chief executive, Kaiwei Tang, and told the phone industry that its devices “have been built and designed to be addictive”.

Off screen he has moved further from Hollywood than his career has. He married the actress and director Lauren Parsekian, founder of the anti-bullying nonprofit Kind Campaign, in Malibu in 2013; they have a daughter, born in 2018, and a son, born in 2022. That same year he legally dropped Sturtevant so the whole family would share the name Paul. After the Los Angeles wildfires of January 2025 they sold their house and moved to Paris. “When the fires happened in LA, we just knew that we were done with LA,” he said.

The work, meanwhile, keeps pulling him back toward the kind of material Need for Speed once promised. In May 2026 he joined the third season of Prime Video‘s Fallout, another video game adaptation, reuniting with Nolan and Joy in a role the producers have kept secret. In June 2026 he appeared opposite Russell Crowe in Derrick Borte’s The Get Out. Next is Anything but Ghosts, Curry Barker‘s horror comedy with Bryce Dallas Howard, which Focus Features releases in the United States on May 7, 2027. In post-production is The Night House, Jo Nesbø’s adaptation of his own novel, directed by Jesper Ganslandt, with Paul as the adult version of the character Jacob Tremblay plays young. None of these parts looks anything like Jesse Pinkman, which is exactly the point.
