Forestella drops 창귀, a single built on Korea’s most feared ghost

Alice Lange

Forestella’s new single, 창귀, takes its name from a figure embedded deep in Korean tiger folklore: a spirit born from an act of total consumption, stripped of its identity, and bound to serve the creature that destroyed it. Four voices, trained across opera stages, conservatories, and rock bands, carry the weight of that mythology through an arrangement that keeps the operatic line intact while giving the subject the gravity it requires.

The changgwi occupies a corner of Korean belief seldom addressed in popular music. In the tradition, when a tiger kills and eats a person, the victim’s spirit cannot pass to the afterlife and instead becomes bound to the tiger, compelled to lure new prey toward the same fate. The legend maps victimhood onto complicity, making the changgwi a figure of genuine tragedy: not a monster, but a person transformed by catastrophic circumstances into an agent of the same destruction they suffered. For Forestella, a group that has made controlled intensity their signature, the subject connects directly to the emotional register they operate in best.

The group — Cho Min-gyu, Ko Woo-rim, Bae Doo-hoon, and Kang Hyung-ho — emerged from JTBC’s Phantom Singer 2, which produced the unlikely combination of conservatory-trained tenors and a bass-baritone who spent years working as a research chemist before the competition upended his trajectory. That formation shaped the group’s appeal from the start: voices operating at very different points on the classical-to-popular spectrum, built by a TV competition into something that has outlasted every reasonable expectation for what a televised talent-show act could become.

창귀 arrives after a year that included The Legacy, the group’s most recent album, and a record-breaking consecutive victory streak on KBS2’s Immortal Songs, a competitive performance series in which Forestella set the longest winning run in the program’s history. Their handling of folkloric material, placed inside orchestral arrangements that preserve operatic line and range, has become their clearest artistic signature and the frame that positions them apart from other Korean crossover acts.

The practical gap between Forestella’s standing within Korea and their reach outside it remains the clearest limit on 창귀’s launch. The single is not available on Spotify, and no official music video had been released at time of publication, two distribution decisions that will slow the track’s exposure beyond Korean streaming platforms. The group’s YouTube channel and international fan communities across the Americas, East Asia, and Europe carry genuine enthusiasm, but enthusiasm without the platform infrastructure to convert it into streams does not move charts. Classical crossover has found international audiences before, but usually through the kind of coordinated platform rollout that 창귀 currently lacks.

창귀 was released on August 25 and is available through digital platforms catalogued under MusicBrainz. The single follows the thematic direction of The Legacy and gives Forestella’s expanding international audience a concrete entry point into the group’s treatment of traditional Korean narrative — an angle the group has not yet exhausted.
