Resident Evil Requiem DLC doubles down on Spencer, the rewrite fans pushed back on

Its writer let slip that the story expansion goes deeper into Umbrella's founder. Capcom has still not named a price, a platform list or a date.

Resident Evil has spent most of its life arguing with its own founding villain. The man who co-founded Umbrella was a name the series talked about long before he walked on screen, and the first game to show him in person also let Albert Wesker kill him. Requiem brought him back the only way a dead man can come back: on tape, in memory, and with second thoughts.

Now the game’s writer has let slip that Capcom’s story expansion will push that reading of Oswell E. Spencer further, not quietly retreat from it. For players, that is the real news in a week of breathless DLC headlines: the creative direction is set, while everything practical, from the name to the price to the release window, is still blank.

What Haris Orkin said about the Requiem DLC

Haris Orkin, the credited writer of Resident Evil Requiem, was talking to the Distance NERDing channel at Meadowlark Comic Con when the subject turned to the expansion. “We have an arc for Spencer in Requiem, you understand that more,” he said. “And then the DLC, you’ll understand it even further.” Then, catching himself: “I probably shouldn’t say that, but yeah.” Video Games Chronicle was first to report the remarks, and the rest of the gaming press followed within a day.

It is a single sentence, but it settles one thing. Capcom’s director, Koshi Nakanishi, had only ever promised that the expansion would “delve deeper into the world of Requiem.” Orkin has now named the part of that world it is digging into.

Why Spencer is the contested choice (base-game spoilers)

Spencer has been dead since Resident Evil 5, where Wesker killed him, and Requiem keeps it that way. He appears through flashbacks and recorded interviews in which he voices regret for the damage his creations caused. Elpis, the prize Victor Gideon chases in the belief that it is a mind-control weapon, turns out to be an antiviral able to neutralise viral weapons, and the recordings reveal that Spencer adopted Grace Ashcroft, one of the game’s two leads, as an infant.

That is a long way from the founder who, as Nintendo Life puts it, used Umbrella as a front for experiments with the Progenitor Virus. Nintendo Life also notes that many fans objected to the new portrayal because it sits awkwardly beside scenes in Resident Evil 5. Popular culture has always loved the late-life confession, the monster handed a reason at the end; Requiem gave Spencer one, and part of its audience did not buy it.

Orkin’s slip means Capcom is not walking that choice back. The expansion is where the repentant Spencer has to be reconciled with the one Wesker confronted, and that is a harder job than a new boss fight.

Resident Evil story DLC has done this before

This is how the modern series finishes its arguments. Game Informer points out that Resident Evil 7 and Village both received story expansions, and Village’s, Shadows of Rose, handed its ending to Rose Winters and carried the game’s family story a generation forward. Insider Gaming notes that Orkin is credited on Shadows of Rose. The writer who helped close Village’s story is now writing the coda to Requiem’s.

That lineage cuts both ways. A story expansion can deepen a contested idea, or it can become the place where a studio explains away what players pushed back on. Orkin’s phrasing, that players will “understand it even further”, suggests the first: the base game was the opening statement, and the expansion is the rest of the case.

What is confirmed about the Resident Evil Requiem DLC, and what is rumor

Confirmed: Nakanishi announced the story expansion in a short video on March 10, 2026, said it “will take some time”, and later told players it was “currently in full production”. Capcom has not announced its name, price, release date or which platforms will get it. Requiem itself launched on February 27, 2026, on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, PC and Nintendo Switch 2, and Capcom said in July that it had sold eight million copies. Since launch, the game has added a photo mode and a free mini-game, Leon Must Die Forever.

Rumor: the insider known as Dusk Golem claims the expansion will arrive late next year, after the Resident Evil Veronica remake, and will return to the ruins of the Spencer Mansion, an area he says was cut from the base game. Video Games Chronicle says Orkin’s comments potentially add credence to that theory, but Orkin named a character, not a location, and Capcom has confirmed neither.

The calendar offers context, not proof. Village launched on May 7, 2021; its expansion was announced at a Capcom showcase in June 2022 and released on October 28, 2022. A similar gap from Requiem’s launch lands in the second half of 2027, which is consistent with the rumor and nothing more.

Spencer has now died once, in Resident Evil 5, and repented once, in Requiem. The expansion is where Capcom has to decide which of those men was the real one, and its writer has just told us which way he is leaning.
