Encounter: A Gripping Yet Pacing-Flawed Psychological Thriller

The opening shot of Encounter lingers on Riz Ahmed’s haunted eyes, a window into the mind of a decorated Marine unraveling at the seams. Directed by Michael Pearce, this 2021 thriller is a tense, psychological ride that blurs the lines between reality and delusion.

At its core, Encounter is a desperate father-son road trip gone wrong. Malik Khan (Ahmed) believes his sons are in mortal danger from an alien parasite infection sweeping the planet. The film’s strength lies in its ability to make us question what’s real. Pearce crafts scenes of eerie tension, like the encounter with the infected cop or the chilling grocery store sequence where Jay begins to doubt his father’s story. The soundtrack, a dissonant blend of electronic and orchestral elements, amplifies the unease.

Ahmed delivers a powerhouse performance, capturing Malik’s desperation and paranoia. His scenes with Lucian-River Chauhan and Aditya Geddada as his sons are genuinely affecting, particularly when Jay starts to question his father’s sanity. Octavia Spencer adds depth as Hattie, Malik’s parole officer, who pieces together the truth about Malik’s mental state.

However, Encounter stumbles in its pacing. The film’s first half is a slow burn, building atmosphere but lacking the urgency promised by its premise. Some of the sci-fi elements feel underdeveloped, and the reveal that Malik is suffering from a mental disorder lands with less impact than intended due to the buildup.

The film’s climax, a confrontation with the sons of the man Malik attacked, is tense but rushed. It lacks the psychological depth that the rest of the film strives for. Additionally, some of the supporting characters, like Dylan (Misha Collins) and Shepard West (Rory Cochrane), feel underutilized and one-dimensional.

Despite its flaws, Encounter is a compelling watch, thanks to Ahmed’s performance and Pearce’s atmospheric direction.
