Spell: Suspenseful but weak on supernatural payoff

Veronica Loop

The opening shot of Spell (2020) lingers on a twisted metal airplane wing, half-buried in the dense foliage of rural Appalachia. It’s an image that promises primal terror, and director Mark Tonderai delivers on that front—but not without some stumbles along the way.

Tonderai’s horror-thriller-fantasy hybrid follows Marquis T. Woods (Omari Hardwick), a man who survives a plane crash only to be taken in by an elderly couple, Eloise (Loretta Devine) and Earl (John Beasley), who nurse him back to health with ancient remedies. The film’s strength lies in its slow-burn atmosphere, which Tonderai crafts with deliberate pacing and eerie sound design. The rural setting is used effectively, the quiet isolation amplifying the tension as Marquis grows increasingly suspicious of his hosts.

Hardwick delivers a committed performance, his growing paranoia palpable even when the script stumbles. Devine and Beasley are equally compelling as the enigmatic couple, their warm hospitality masking something far more sinister. The trio’s dynamic is the film’s emotional core, and their scenes together crackle with an unsettling energy.

However, Spell falters in its execution of the fantasy elements. The supernatural revelations feel rushed, undercutting the build-up of dread. A mid-film reveal about the couple’s true nature lands with a thud rather than a gasp, largely due to the film’s reluctance to commit to its own mythology. The climax, set in an abandoned church, is visually striking but suffers from clumsy editing and convoluted action.

The film’s attempt to blend genres—horror, thriller, fantasy—is ambitious but uneven. While Tonderai excels at creating tension, he struggles with the tonal shifts required by the narrative. The result is a film that feels caught between two worlds, never fully committing to either.

Spell has its moments of genuine chills and strong performances, but it’s let down by pacing issues and a lack of clarity in its supernatural elements.
