Love is Blind: Netherlands: Netflix sends 30 Dutch singles into the pods, faces unseen

Every dating app the Netherlands opens starts with a face. Love is Blind: Netherlands begins by taking it away. Thirty single Dutch adults agree to meet, talk, and decide whether to spend their lives together before they are allowed to see one another. The rule is simple and total: attachment first, appearance later, or never, if it does not get that far.

The series is the Dutch edition of Netflix‘s Love Is Blind, the format in which strangers court each other through a wall. It is hosted by Nicolette van Dam and Bas Smit, a married couple familiar to Dutch viewers, and produced by Fremantle Netherlands. Across the season the participants move from the pods into the outside world and, for the couples who get that far, toward a wedding day where the answer is either yes or no.

The mechanism is a set of soft-lit rooms, the pods, divided by a wall. Two people talk; neither sees the other. A proposal, if it comes, is made blind. Only after an engagement do the couples meet face to face and, from there, move toward a wedding day. Every ordinary step of a relationship arrives in the wrong order, and that inversion is the whole design.

Strip the format to its object and what remains is a wall built to hold back one piece of information. Reality television usually spends its budget on what the camera can show. This one spends it on what it keeps out. The face, the first thing a profile sells and the thing a swipe settles in under a second, is the surface the show withholds until it has already done its work. The reveal, when it arrives, is not a bonus scene. It is the experiment closing.

That withholding is also a gamble the participants sign for. An engagement here is a promise made to a voice. The person on the other side of the wall is chosen for what they say and how they say it, with none of the shortcuts the eyes provide. It is a large decision built on a narrow base, and the season is the record of how that base holds, or does not, once the wall comes down.

The Netherlands is a country that dates through glass. The photo is the filter, the profile is the pitch, and the first judgement is visual and fast. Love is Blind: Netherlands runs the opposite procedure in exactly that market. It leaves the rest of modern courtship in place, the small talk, the second-guessing, the speed, and removes only the image, to see what the image was carrying.

The pods are not new. The format began in the United States and has since been rebuilt in Sweden, the United Kingdom and Germany, each edition testing whether the rule travels. National versions tend to expose their countries more than the original does: how directly people speak, how quickly they commit, what counts as a dealbreaker once looks are off the table. The Dutch edition arrives as the newest entry in that comparison, and its interest is partly in what a Dutch cast treats as too much, too soon, or not enough.

Home viewers will also read it against local ground. Temptation Island built its tension on watching attraction in plain sight. B&B Vol Liefde turned rural matchmaking into a national habit. First Dates put strangers across a table and let the camera wait. Love is Blind: Netherlands takes the opposite bet: it hides the table and keeps the talk, and asks the audience to follow a romance it cannot yet see.

Netflix is releasing the season in pieces. Five episodes arrive first, three follow a week later, then a single episode, with a reunion still to be dated. The structure is a pacing choice as deliberate as the wall. It holds the wedding-day answer back and delivers it in installments, closer to the way the couples themselves wait, the commitment made early and the verdict arriving slowly.

What the altar cannot settle is whether a bond formed with the eyes shut is love or only the absence of the usual reasons to refuse. The pods remove the fastest judgement in dating; they do not prove that judgement was wrong. That is the question the season opens and, by design, leaves standing.

Love is Blind: Netherlands premieres on Netflix on 30 September 2026 with the first five episodes. Episodes six to eight follow on 7 October and episode nine on 14 October, with a reunion episode still to be announced. The season runs to ten episodes, features thirty single participants, and is hosted by Nicolette van Dam and Bas Smit for Fremantle Netherlands.
