Most romantic comedies stop the moment two best friends finally admit what everyone around them already knew. The credits roll on the kiss, and nobody has to watch the couple split the bills, argue over whose career comes first, or meet the stranger on the beach who makes one of them look twice. Benefits with Friends spent its first season getting Bia and Victor to that kiss. Its second season, which Disney+ is about to release, starts on the morning after.

For readers outside Brazil, the show needs a short introduction. Benefits with Friends is the English title of Amor da Minha Vida, a Portuguese-language romantic dramedy and Disney+ Star Original created by Matheus Souza. Bruna Marquezine plays Bia, an actress who left Brasília to work in Rio de Janeiro, and Sérgio Malheiros plays Victor, her closest friend, who turned his lighting shop into a burger restaurant. The first season ran ten episodes along the friends-to-lovers track, with Danilo Mesquita, Rayssa Bratillieri, Malu Rodrigues and Sophia Abrahão around them as exes, rivals and confidants.

Where season one left Bia and Victor

The recap matters, because the new season is built directly on it. In the first season Bia nearly moved to Portugal with Marcelo, a photographer played by Danilo Mesquita, then turned back at the airport and moved in with Victor instead. The relationship broke when she admitted she had slept with Gabriel, played by João Guilherme. The finale brought the two back together at a concert, only for Victor to reveal he was seeing Paula again, Rayssa Bratillieri’s character. A post-credits scene had him give up a planned business move to São Paulo and turn up at Bia’s door.

The new season continues from that ending. Bia and Victor are now a couple who love each other, and adult life is pulling their plans in different directions. The question the season sets up is whether they stay together or each follows the path their ambitions point to. Brazilian coverage of the trailer summed up the idea in two words: the pós-final feliz, the part after the happy ending.

A rom-com that keeps going after the kiss

That premise is the most interesting thing about the show. The friends-to-lovers story, from When Harry Met Sally onward, treats the confession as the destination. Everything before it is obstacle and everything after it is implied. A second season of a series like this has two options: break the couple up so the chase can restart, or stay with them and look at what the relationship costs. The synopsis points to the second, and that moves the series closer to Richard Linklater‘s Before Sunset and Before Midnight than to the genre it started in.

The trailer, as Brazilian outlet Omelete described it, does not promise a smooth road. Bia is drawn to a man she meets on the beach and starts flirting with him while trying not to repeat her old mistakes. Another character tells Victor that Bia destroys everything she touches. In the trailer’s closing stretch, by Omelete’s account, Bia visits her father, who seems shocked by the visit, which hints at a family story the first season barely opened. The first season had also given Bia a brief relationship with a woman, played by Fernanda Paes Leme, so the show has never treated her desire as a straight line toward Victor.

Marquezine has said the new episodes bring more collective reflections and are less centred on one person growing up. That is a real change of register for a show whose first season worked as a coming-of-age story for its two leads. The premise suggests the conflicts now come from outside the couple as much as from inside it: work, family, other people.

Who is new in season two

The cast list grows by thirteen names. Alanis Guillen, known for the Pantanal remake, joins as Giovana, and a publicity photo of her embracing Marquezine set off a round of speculation in Brazil about a new couple. Gleici Damasceno, Clarice Falcão, Rômulo Estrela, Maria Ribeiro, Daniel Dantas, Guida Viana, Louise Cardoso, Gabriel Godoy, Nil Marcondes, Pablo Morais, Priscila Reis and Hugo Bonemer are also new to the series.

Returning around the two leads are Danilo Mesquita, Rayssa Bratillieri, Sophia Abrahão, Agda Couto, Pâmela Morais and Priscilla Rozenbaum, along with Cissa Guimarães as Renata, Bia’s mother in Brasília. With a father now entering the picture, the season seems ready to give Bia a family on both sides rather than a single parent waiting back home.

Marquezine on both sides of the camera

The series is also a career turn for its star. On the first season Marquezine was lead actress, producer and one of the co-directors, her first time behind the camera, with René Sampaio directing. Sampaio had already directed Eduardo e Mônica, the romance built on the Legião Urbana song, which Souza helped write. Malheiros has described Victor as an alter ego of Souza, which makes the show an unusually personal piece of writing about a friendship that turns into something else.

For the second season, Omelete credits Souza as creator, developer and director. Disney has made no secret of how much the project rests on its lead: Eric Schreier, president of international originals at Disney Entertainment, publicly called Marquezine a brilliant actress when the new trailer was released.

Why the show matters to Disney+ in Brazil

The first season led the Disney+ most-watched ranking in Brazil on its opening weekend and was billed as the platform’s biggest debut for a new Brazilian series. It was also the first Brazilian original romantic comedy released under the Star Original label. Disney renewed it for a third season before the second had even premiered, which says more about the platform’s confidence than any trailer can. Outside Brazil the show travels under other names: Benefits with Friends in English and Bia y Víctor: Amor de mi vida in Spanish.

That leaves the question the genre usually never has to answer. Once a love story has been told, and told with a happy ending, what do two people still owe each other when their ambitions point to different cities? The second season looks built to test that question, not to settle it.
