SKULD’s free demo puts you on the front line of tower defense as a Norse Valkyrie

Super Monkey Studio’s debut swaps the commander’s view for a blade: Skuld builds the turrets, then holds the gate herself

Tower defense has always been a genre of distance. You get the commander’s view, the map from above, the calm of someone who never has to stand where the arrows land. SKULD, the debut game from Super Monkey Studio, a young team in Málaga, walks that camera down to the ground. Its free demo is now live on Steam, and the premise reads like a quiet correction to the genre: you don’t watch the battle, you hold the gate yourself.

The figure at the gate is well chosen. Skuld is the only character in Norse myth who is both a Norn, one of the weavers of fate, and a Valkyrie, and the game picks her up after Ragnarök, when Hela’s darkness is spreading across the Nine Realms. The studio’s own shorthand puts it in the lineage of Orcs Must Die!, dressed in a hand-painted look that openly nods to Hades.

The design turns on a split attention. In fast third-person combat, Skuld dodges, strikes and unleashes divine powers while placing and upgrading turrets around her. Some enemies go for the defenses, some for the gate, some straight for her, and the Steam page spells out the stakes: if they reach Valhalla you lose, and if Skuld falls you lose too. Before each battle you pick a deck of towers and shape her abilities, building for the blade or for the base. Each realm brings new enemies, so no build is meant to work everywhere.

Between fights, the game becomes something closer to a court drama. Skuld returns to Valhalla, where Odin, Loki, Heimdall, Idunn and the other gods all want something from her, and those conversations decide where the campaign goes next. The tagline is the cleanest statement of the idea: her fate is written, her choices are not. Every texture is hand-painted, with bold comic-book linework in battle, and an original soundtrack gives each realm, from the golden walls of Asgard to the frozen depths of Helheim, its own sound and its own boss.

The studio’s path has been as winding as its heroine’s. Super Monkey Studio began as a group of students making their very first game, and the genre changed more than once along the way. “What never changed was SKULD,” co-founder Hugo Maldonado said in the announcement. “We wanted a game where you don’t just plan the defense, you fight on the front line of it.” A Kickstarter campaign earlier this year funded the project at 140% and earned the platform’s “Project We Love” pick; Develup Games is publishing.

The demo offers the first hands-on look: cutting through waves of Hela’s corrupted creatures with melee combos, placing and upgrading the first turrets, and feeling out the mix of real-time action and strategy. It is free on Steam now. The full game is listed on Steam for 2027, for Windows PC; no consoles have been announced.

It is a small first game, but the argument is clear. Skuld is the Norn of what must be, and SKULD keeps asking her to choose anyway, which is a fair description of a tower defense in which the commander is also the last tower standing.
