Nvidia’s DLSS 5 Has Leaked, and It’s the First DLSS That Costs You Framerate

A single graphics file fell out of an early build of a basketball game, and within an afternoon Nvidia‘s next flagship rendering feature was running in games it was never meant to touch. That is the surface of the DLSS 5 leak. Underneath the clips now filling timelines is something more useful than the memes: a free, early look at exactly what Nvidia is asking players to trade for its most heavily marketed AI feature.

The mechanics of the leak are almost mundane. An early-access build of NBA 2K27 shipped with a stray Nvidia library, an unreleased runtime called DLSSNR, and a hardware watcher named Renan Maniero noticed it sitting in the game folder. Modders in the RenoDX community had it wired into other titles within hours, injecting it into Control, Skyrim and Final Fantasy VII Rebirth to see what the unreleased feature actually did. What they found is now doing the arguing for them.

DLSS built its reputation by giving you something for almost nothing. It rendered a game at a lower resolution and used AI to upscale the image, so you gained frames. DLSS 5’s headline addition, Neural Rendering, runs that deal in reverse. Instead of reconstructing a cheaper picture, it lays a live AI pass over the one your GPU already drew, rewriting faces, textures and lighting on the fly. It does not save work. It adds it.

The cost shows up the moment you switch it on. On an RTX 5060, testers watched Control fall from eighty-six frames per second to thirty-four with Neural Rendering enabled. An RTX 5070 Ti dropped from around seventy-one to thirty-five at 4K. In Grand Theft Auto V, pushing the sliders took one setup from ninety down to twenty-nine; in Final Fantasy VII Rebirth, framerates roughly halved while video-memory use spiked. Across different cards and games the pattern holds: turning the feature on costs something close to half your performance.

The way the leak arrived, with modders promising to put the effect on everything, is the part worth slowing down on. The build wants a current-generation RTX 50-series card. A single modder got it onto last-generation RTX 40-series hardware only by patching out CUDA instructions it refused to run, and even then performance suffers. Nothing here touches an AMD or Intel GPU. The honest version is narrow: a preview feature that runs well on Nvidia’s newest cards, poorly on the ones just before them, and not at all on anyone else’s.

The visuals are why the clips travel. Left at its defaults, Neural Rendering gives Skyrim’s characters a flat, dead-behind-the-eyes stare, and reshapes Final Fantasy’s Cloud into someone his own animators would struggle to place. Nvidia has framed the technology as a set of controls handed to developers, intensity, style and skin masking, meant to keep artistic direction in their hands. The leaked build shows what that direction looks like before anyone tunes it: off-model, and not subtly.

This is why the leak is more than a curiosity. Nvidia still plans to ship Neural Rendering this autumn, and it is one of the features the 50-series is being sold on. The leak lets a buyer test the pitch early, on real games, and see for themselves that the marquee AI upgrade in Nvidia’s next cards is a cosmetic layer that trades a large slice of framerate for a look you may not want, on hardware you may not own.

For a decade, switching on the Nvidia feature meant your game ran faster. This is the first time it makes it run slower, and thanks to a file that leaked out of a basketball game, nobody has to take Nvidia’s word for the difference.
