Modern Warfare 4’s 39GB Switch 2 Update Mostly Rewrites Files You Already Have

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 has just shown Switch 2 owners how this series ships software. A download heavy enough to send players to the storage screen arrived without a word from Activision, and by every account available it adds nothing you can see: no new maps, no new weapons, no new modes. What it touches is the plumbing.

That gap between what you download and what changes is the useful part of this story. A Call of Duty patch is rarely a short list of edits; the series has long shipped large downloads that reorganize data already on the machine. The installed game barely grows while the download balloons, and on a hybrid console with modest built-in storage the number that decides whether you can play tonight is neither of those. It is how much free space the patch demands before it will install.

What the Modern Warfare 4 update actually fixes

The official patch notes from Infinity Ward describe a maintenance release for every platform. Hijack gets better spawn locations and respawn timing. A Search and Destroy exploit that let players defuse the bomb from an unintended distance or position is closed. DMZ gets the more consequential repairs: Party Leaders could pull teammates out of a match without their consent, which marked those players’ Active Duty Operators as missing in action; the exfil helicopter could vanish with players still inside; and AI reinforcements during the Shopping Mission spawned too often. There are crash fixes, menu fixes and a cosmetic one for bullets that appeared to float inside the magazine of the La Sombra Venenosa Blueprint.

The studio also lists known issues it has not solved. The regional map animation shown while searching for a lobby has been switched off as a prospective fix for reports of hitching, and the team is investigating players being kicked while spectating in Multiplayer.

How big is the download? The reports disagree

Nobody official has published a size. GoNintendo, My Nintendo News and GameRant, citing player reports, put the Switch 2 download at about 39GB. Nintendo Life, also working from player reports, said around 30GB. The figure everyone agrees on is the end state: after the patch, the game occupies 91.3GB. GameRant notes that Nintendo eShop data listed 84.9GB before launch, which means the installation grew by roughly 6.4GB. The rest of the download replaced files that were already there.

There is a second open question the quick coverage skipped. Nintendo Life folded Activision’s all-platform notes into its report on the Switch 2 download, as if they described the same thing. GameRant points out that the large download first appeared only on Switch 2, while the notes cover a smaller update shipped everywhere, and says it remains unclear whether the two are one release. That is plausible, but it is not confirmed. Switch 2 had its own repairs during early access week: earlier notes fixed a missing prompt that blocked the Chemical Denial Dynamic Op at NuriGO Mall and a bug that stopped players buying saved Blueprint modifications, both specific to Nintendo’s console.

Why the size matters more on Switch 2

The arithmetic is unforgiving. Switch 2 ships with 256GB of internal storage, and at roughly 91GB Modern Warfare 4 holds more than a third of it, a larger share of what is really usable once the system reserves its own space, as GameRant notes. That footprint carries Campaign, Multiplayer and DMZ together, according to Nintendo Life. My Nintendo News says the patch needs 39GB of free space and expects updates to keep arriving on the weekly rhythm the series follows elsewhere. Activision has taken steps to cut file sizes in the past, Nintendo Life recalls.

The way out is a microSD Express card, the format Switch 2 uses for expansion. GameRant reports that 1TB is the largest capacity on sale and that suitable cards often cost well over $300, while the 2TB cards once expected around mid-2027 may slip because NAND flash supply is tight, partly from AI-driven storage demand.

Context makes the moment sharper. Modern Warfare 4 is the first new Call of Duty on Nintendo hardware since Call of Duty: Ghosts on Wii U in 2013, and it launched on October 23 after a week-long early access period, receiving its day-one patch on Switch 2 the same day. Activision’s maintenance notes are dated October 24.

For a Switch 2 owner whose console is already full, a patch that fixes, among other things, bullets floating inside one weapon Blueprint’s magazine can be the thing that forces a trip to buy a memory card.
