Every story in Layers of Fear is about an artist who cannot put the brush down. A painter wanders a mansion that rearranges itself each time he looks away, chasing a portrait he is unable to finish; an actor walks the decks of an ocean liner, taking orders from a director he never sees. The series has always been about obsession with a single, final work, so there is a quiet logic in its last chapter becoming a finished object you can hold in your hands.

Meridiem, the Madrid publisher that has built its catalogue around boxed editions of games that might otherwise live only as downloads, has put Bloober Team’s horror collection on a Nintendo Switch 2 cartridge. In the announcement, Meridiem says it designed and manufactured the physical Final Masterpiece Edition itself, with a special case, a lenticular postcard and an artbook, while Bloober Team remains the developer and the publisher of the digital version.

The package is the series in its complete form. It gathers Layers of Fear and Layers of Fear 2 in their reimagined versions, every released expansion, and new chapters written to stitch the stories together. Inheritance returns to the mansion as the Painter’s Daughter, picking through childhood memories her father poisoned; The Final Note retells the family’s collapse through the eyes of the Painter’s Wife. Layers of Fear 2 keeps the unseen director voiced by Tony Todd, the late Candyman actor, whose methods blur performance and reality. The Final Prologue puts players behind the camera as the Director, trying to rescue a doomed production, and The Lighthouse Chapter follows the Writer into an abandoned lighthouse that holds the thread connecting every tale.

That structure is the real idea here. Three creators, the Painter, the Actor and the Writer, each willing to pay any price for their craft, and a frame story that turns the whole saga into one long manuscript. The play itself stays deliberately simple: first-person exploration, environmental puzzles and spaces that shift behind your back, so that the architecture does the storytelling. Bloober Team describes visuals rebuilt with HDR, ray tracing and dynamic lighting, and the score by composer Arek Reikowski remains the series’ emotional spine.

For the Kraków studio, founded in 2008, this is a return to origins. The first Layers of Fear, released in 2016, is the game that put Bloober Team on the map; it went on to make Observer, Blair Witch and The Medium, partnered with Konami on the acclaimed Silent Hill 2 remake, and launched its first original survival horror IP, Cronos: The New Dawn, in September 2025.

The Final Masterpiece Edition first reached Switch 2 as a digital release on December 19, 2025. According to Meridiem’s release, dated October 28, 2026, the physical cartridge edition is now available, carrying a PEGI 16 rating. It is the second Bloober Team game Meridiem has brought to Switch 2 on cartridge, alongside Observer: System Redux.

Meridiem pitches the collection as one last chance to face your fears. For a series about artists who could never let a work go, a sealed box on a shelf feels like the right ending.
