Sofía Vergara, television’s top-earning comic actress who waited until 51 for her first drama

For most of her career in the United States, Sofía Vergara was paid extraordinarily well to be one thing. The accent, the volume, the comic mispronunciations and the tight dresses of Gloria Delgado-Pritchett, the character she played for eleven seasons of Modern Family, added up to the most profitable persona on American television. Vergara, who is a natural blonde and was routinely asked to dye her hair dark so that she would look more stereotypically Hispanic on screen, understood that transaction better than most of the people who criticised it. She sold the caricature, laughed at it before anyone else could, and invested the proceeds.

The question her career kept postponing was whether there was anything else in her. The answer arrived late and in disguise. Under a prosthetic nose, false teeth and a dark curly wig, she played the Colombian drug trafficker Griselda Blanco for Netflix, and the industry that had filed her under comedy for fifteen years nominated her as a dramatic lead for the first time. Today she sits on the judging panel of America’s Got Talent, runs a portfolio of consumer brands that stretches from denim to coffee, and has turned into something rarer than a sitcom star: a performer who owns both her image and the business built on top of it.

Barranquilla, a beach and a soft-drink commercial

Sofía Margarita Vergara Vergara grew up in Barranquilla, the port city on Colombia’s Caribbean coast, where she was born on July 10, 1972, into a large Catholic family. Her mother, Margarita Vergara de Vergara, ran the household; her father, Julio Enrique Vergara Robayo, raised cattle for the meat industry. She was one of six children, and her siblings and cousins called her Toti, a nickname she would put on a beauty brand half a century later.

Show business was not the plan. She studied dentistry for about three years and left two semesters short of her degree. The detour began when a photographer noticed her on a beach in Santa Marta. At 17, after her Catholic schoolteachers gave their personal permission, she appeared in a Pepsi commercial broadcast across Latin America, and the spot made her face known far beyond the Colombian coast. Modelling offers followed in Colombia and then in New York, Miami and London, and she took classes at the Creative Workshops School of Acting.

Her early adulthood was also shaped by private events that rarely surface in her comedy. She married her high-school boyfriend, Joe Gonzalez, at 18, and their son, Manolo, was born on September 16, 1991; the couple divorced two years later. In the 1990s her older brother Rafael was killed in Colombia during an attempted kidnapping, a death she has connected to the cartel violence of those years. The family relocated to Miami, and Vergara’s life moved with them. Her cousin Sandra, who grew up as an adopted sister, later built her own acting career in the United States.

The Univision years and a crossover in stages

In Miami she found Univision, the largest Spanish-language network in the country. She started as a model on variety programmes such as Sábado Gigante, co-hosted the travel show Fuera de Serie, and later worked as a celebrity correspondent for Primer Impacto and El Gordo y la Flaca. The work taught her to perform for a live camera, and it built her a large audience among Hispanic viewers long before English-language Hollywood knew her name. With her manager, Luis Balaguer, she co-founded Latin World Entertainment, the talent-management and production company that still stands behind her projects.

At 28, in 2000, she was diagnosed with thyroid cancer. She had the gland removed, underwent radioactive iodine treatment and recovered fully, although she takes daily medication to replace the hormone her body no longer produces. She has spoken about the diagnosis in interviews as a reason to take routine check-ups seriously, and years later she became a spokesperson for the thyroid drug Synthroid.

Film roles arrived gradually. She appeared in Big Trouble in 2002, took a lead in the romantic comedy Chasing Papi in 2003, and had roles in John Singleton’s Four Brothers and Catherine Hardwicke’s Lords of Dogtown in 2005. She co-starred in two short-lived ABC sitcoms, Hot Properties and The Knights of Prosperity, and turned up in Tyler Perry‘s comedies Meet the Browns and Madea Goes to Jail. In 2009 she spent six weeks on Broadway as Matron Mama Morton in Chicago.

Gloria, and the most valuable accent on television

Modern Family premiered on ABC in 2009 and made Vergara a star in English. Gloria, the Colombian wife of the family patriarch Jay Pritchett, played by Ed O’Neill, was written as the show’s force of nature, and Vergara played her with a timing that made the jokes about her English land on everyone else. She earned four consecutive Emmy nominations for supporting actress in a comedy series, from 2010 to 2013, four Golden Globe nominations and a share of the Screen Actors Guild award for the ensemble cast. The series ran for eleven seasons and ended in 2020.

The money was historic. Forbes ranked her the highest-paid actress on American television seven years in a row, through 2018, and in 2020, with Modern Family finishing and a talent-show contract beginning, the magazine placed her at the top of its list of the highest-paid actresses in the world, with an estimated $43 million. She received a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame on May 7, 2015.

Film work ran in parallel during the sitcom’s hiatuses. She joined the ensemble of New Year’s Eve, voiced Carmen in Happy Feet Two and played Odile in The Smurfs. Her first leading role in a major studio film came in the Farrelly brothers’ The Three Stooges, in which she played a wife trying to manipulate the trio into killing her husband. Robert Rodriguez cast her in Machete Kills, John Turturro in Fading Gigolo and Jon Favreau in Chef, where she played Inez, the ex-wife of Favreau’s cook. Hot Pursuit, a road comedy she co-led with Reese Witherspoon in 2015, was savaged by critics. She had also dropped out of Lee Daniels’s The Paperboy when its shooting dates collided with Modern Family.

The caricature question

The traits that made Gloria profitable also made Vergara a permanent subject of argument. For years, commentators asked whether the character widened the space for Latina actresses on network television or narrowed it to accent, curves and volume. Vergara’s position has been consistent: she built the persona herself, she enjoys playing it and she has profited from it on her own terms. The clearest test came at the Emmy Awards in 2014, when she stood on a rotating pedestal while the Television Academy’s chairman, Bruce Rosenblum, gave a speech about the industry. Critics called the bit sexist. Vergara called that reading ridiculous and said the sketch showed that “someone can be hot and also be funny and make fun of herself”, adding that critics should lighten up. The dispute never quite settled. It followed her into the role that changed how the industry saw her.

Griselda, and a drama that came late

Griselda, released by Netflix on January 25, 2024, was the first dramatic role of her career. Developed with Eric Newman, one of the producers of Narcos, the six-episode limited series follows Griselda Blanco’s rise and fall in the Miami cocaine trade. Vergara was also an executive producer. She has said the part was personal: she grew up in Colombia during the drug-trafficking era, and her brother’s murder showed her what that violence cost ordinary families.

In July 2024 she received a Primetime Emmy nomination for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Limited or Anthology Series or Movie, the first for a Latina born in Latin America in that category and the fifth Emmy nomination of her career. Jodie Foster won; Vergara joked that she had been robbed for the fifth time. A Golden Globe nomination for best actress in a limited series followed at the 82nd ceremony.

The series also reopened old arguments. Some Latino critics saw it as one more narco story sold to global audiences, a genre that has dominated how streaming platforms depict Colombia. Vergara answered that she had not been afraid to tell it because it is part of her country’s history, and conceded that there are many other extraordinary stories that studios had never let her make. Blanco’s son, Michael Corleone Blanco, sued Vergara, Netflix and the producers in Miami, arguing that the show used his family’s image and likeness without authorisation; the case was later settled and dismissed with prejudice.

The judge’s chair

Since 2020 Vergara has been a judge on NBC’s America’s Got Talent, the job that replaced Modern Family as her weekly television presence. Two of her Golden Buzzer picks have gone on to win the whole competition: the Lebanese dance troupe Mayyas in 2022 and the singer Jessica Sanchez in 2025. The show’s twenty-first season, her seventh on the panel alongside Simon Cowell, Howie Mandel and Mel B, premiered on June 2, 2026, and closed on September 23 with the singer and guitarist Nene Royal as winner. The season added a Judges’ Callbacks round, and Vergara hosted her selected acts in Beverly Hills with the singer Sebastián Yatra and the creator Lele Pons.

Animation has become the other steady part of her screen work. She voiced Dolores, a couch, in Strays, and Valentina, the villain’s partner, in Despicable Me 4 in 2024. Through Latin World Entertainment she executive-produced Koati, an animated feature about creatures in a Latin American rainforest, and voices Zaina in it. A 13-episode Koati series, first commissioned as a ViX original, premiered on Netflix on November 13, 2025, in English and Spanish.

The business of being Sofía

Vergara’s commercial career runs almost as long as her acting one. In 2011 she designed a clothing line for Kmart and became a face of CoverGirl, and the same year she shot a Diet Pepsi commercial with David Beckham. A furniture line with Rooms To Go followed in 2013 and her first fragrance, Sofia by Sofia Vergara, in 2014; four more have come since. She launched a size-inclusive denim label at Walmart, and her fall 2026 collection for the retailer is built around curve-conscious jeans, with several styles priced under $30. In June 2023 she launched Toty, a beauty brand named after her childhood nickname, and in 2024 Dios Mío Coffee, which buys its beans from women growers in Colombia. In 2017 she settled a dispute with Venus Concept over the use of her likeness in its marketing, a reminder that her face is the product in all of it.

Private life, public record

Vergara became a United States citizen in 2014 and revealed on Jimmy Kimmel Live! that she had scored perfectly on the citizenship test. Her engagement to the businessman Nick Loeb ended in May 2014 and was followed by years of litigation over two frozen embryos the couple had created: Loeb dropped a suit in California, and a Louisiana lawsuit filed in the embryos’ names was dismissed in August 2017 because the court had no jurisdiction. She married the actor Joe Manganiello in Palm Beach, Florida, on November 21, 2015; the couple announced their separation in July 2023, and the divorce was finalised in February 2024. Her son, Manolo, who once filmed her for his web series Vida con Toty, remains her most visible collaborator, and the two still appear together at events such as the South Beach Wine and Food Festival.

The next chapter is open in a way it was not a decade ago. With the twenty-first season of America’s Got Talent behind her and Koati streaming for young audiences, the missing piece is a second dramatic lead. In 2024 she and Eric Newman said they were talking about another Miami-set series built around a strong, funny woman in the middle of trouble; nothing has been announced. After Griselda, the offers she weighs are no longer only the ones that ask her to be Gloria.
