Over one long night in Nuri Bilge Ceylan’s Once Upon a Time in Anatolia, Fırat Tanış plays Kenan, the confessed killer who cannot remember where he buried the body. He leads a convoy of policemen, a prosecutor and a doctor from one dark hillside to the next and barely speaks. The camera keeps going back to his face to find out what he knows. That face is still the best place to start with Tanış, because the question the film asks of Kenan has followed the actor off the set: how much of this man can an audience actually read?

The answer has never been simple. The same actor spent two seasons as Koyu Bilal, the broad and much-loved comic foil of the sitcom Geniş Aile, then turned up as a French envoy, an Ottoman pasha and a nightclub manager nursing a grudge on Netflix. He has written songs that other singers turned into hits, directed a feature film, and spent a decade touring a one-man play built on a medieval Sufi poem. He also walked away from Turkish television once, on principle. This year, a Turkish television channel walked away from him.

Nuri Fırat Tanış was born in Istanbul on 5 May 1975, into a family of Ahıska, or Meskhetian Turkish, origin. He found the stage as a pupil at Mehmet Beyazıd high school, trained in the theatre department of Istanbul University’s State Conservatory and, between 1998 and 2001, worked with the Istanbul City Theatres under directors including Başar Sabuncu and Mehmet Ulusoy. Music ran alongside the acting from the start. “Bir Sel Gibi”, one of Levent Yüksel’s hits of 2000, is his song, and Emre Altuğ and Gülay have also recorded his material.

Cinema noticed him quickly. In Sır Çocukları, a drama about runaway children sleeping rough around Istanbul’s Haydarpaşa station, he played Velit, the gang leader who tries to send a ten-year-old boy back home. The part won him best actor at the Antalya Golden Orange festival in 2002 and at the Istanbul International Film Festival the following year, along with promising-newcomer prizes in Ankara and from the Turkish film critics’ association, SİYAD. Cemal Şan’s Dilber’in Sekiz Günü, a story of a young woman in a poor eastern village, brought a second round of best actor awards, at Bursa’s İpekyolu festival in 2008 and at the Ankara International Film Festival in 2009.

Television made him familiar. Through the 2000s he worked on Yeditepe İstanbul, Aşka Sürgün, Ihlamurlar Altında and Menekşe ile Halil, where he played the gentle elder brother Yusuf. Geniş Aile, which began on Kanal D in 2009, was his first real comedy, and Koyu Bilal became the role most Turkish viewers attach to his name; he went back to it for two spin-off films in 2015 and 2016. In between came Ceylan’s film, which premiered in competition at Cannes in 2011 and won the Grand Prix, and in 2012 the role of the rebel Patrona Halil in Bir Zamanlar Osmanlı: Kıyam.

The first break in that run was his own decision. On 10 June 2013, during the Gezi Park protests, Tanış announced that he was giving up television series, saying the channels had not given the protests enough airtime. He kept to it for years. He directed and acted in the feature Karınca Kapanı, released in 2014, took film roles and, in 2016, opened Gelin Tanış Olalım. His next regular series role did not come until 2017, as Adem Boran in Star TV’s İstanbullu Gelin.

That return opened the most varied stretch of his career. Netflix cast him in Ezel Akay’s Leyla Everlasting and then as Çelebi, the club manager whose resentment shadows Gökçe Bahadır’s Matilda in The Club, Zeynep Günay Tan’s series set in 1950s Istanbul. On Show TV’s Aziz he played a French delegate in Antakya; in Netflix’s Another Self he was Zaman; in FOX’s Adım Farah, opposite Demet Özdemir and Engin Akyürek, he was Mehmet Koşaner. Two Netflix films, Art of Love and Season of Love, followed in 2024. That December he took the part of the patriarch in Şakir Paşa Ailesi: Mucizeler ve Skandallar, MedYapım’s drama about the family that produced the writer Cevat Şakir Kabaağaçlı and the painter Fahrelnissa Zeid. In February 2025 an Istanbul court halted the series after Kabaağaçlı’s grandchildren sued, arguing it violated the family’s personal rights, and the aired episodes were taken down.

The hardest questions about Tanış are not about range, though. In February 2024 the pianist İklim Tamkan, his former partner, said publicly that she had obtained a protective order against him, accusing him of psychological violence, threats and persistent stalking after their relationship ended in September 2023. Tanış replied briefly on Instagram that his silence was “not an admission” but came from respect for the law, a reference to Turkey’s Law No. 6284 on protecting families and preventing violence against women. No court ruling on the substance of the claims has been reported. The case came back in April 2026, when Show TV’s Delikanlı announced him as Miran, a mentor figure to Mert Yazıcıoğlu’s Yusuf. Within a week the producer, OGM Pictures, said talks had ended by mutual understanding because of scheduling and technical conditions. The columnist Birsen Altuntaş, as cited by Cumhuriyet, reported that the channel made the decision after the allegations spread again on social media.

His last screen appearance so far came weeks earlier. Disney+ premiered Bize Bi’şey Olmaz on 25 March 2026, an eight-episode romance from MF Yapım led by Mert Ramazan Demir and Miray Daner, with Tanış in the supporting cast. Most of his working year, however, is spent on stage. Gelin Tanış Olalım, adapted by Semih Çelenk from Yunus Emre’s poem and produced by Donkişot Tiyatro, casts him as Abdal, a devout traveller who talks to the audience as if to a companion on the road, backed by live musicians. It has toured Turkey for ten years and has now outlasted every series on his résumé.

Off stage, Tanış was married to the singer Gülay and later to Kübra Tanış, from 2014 until their divorce in 2022; they have a daughter.

No new screen role has been announced since Delikanlı. The play’s autumn run continues in Istanbul, at the Caddebostan Cultural Center on 22 October and at MOİ Sahne on 26 October.
