For five seasons of El Señor de los Cielos, Fernanda Castillo played the woman who kept a cartel’s books and could not stop loving the man who had killed her brothers. Mónica Robles was written as a supporting villain. By the time Castillo left the Telemundo series, its viewers had twice voted her favourite lead actress, and a large part of the Spanish-speaking audience in the United States and Latin America still calls her by the character’s name. Now Netflix has cast her opposite another man called Aurelio. This one is a Supreme Court justice behind bars, not a drug lord, and her character is the wife left to clean up after him.

The coincidence sits in Netflix’s own synopsis for La ley de Alicia, the Mexican adaptation of The Good Wife, with Castillo in the title role. It closes a loop she has spent the better part of a decade trying to close: being read as something other than the woman with the ledger and the gun.

María Fernanda Castillo García was born in Hermosillo, Sonora, on 24 March 1982, and came to acting through dance, training in classical ballet and jazz as a girl before three years at Televisa’s Centro de Educación Artística, the network’s acting school, from which she graduated in 2003. The industry noticed her before it knew what to do with her. She became the face of the newspaper El Heraldo de México and of the Acapulco Festival, and played Camila in the youth telenovela Clap, el lugar de tus sueños.

Then she went to the stage, the part of the story her television fame has buried. After dancing in a production of Cabaret, she won the lead, María, in the Mexico City staging of Nacho Cano’s Mecano musical Hoy no me puedo levantar, which opened in May 2006 with Alan Estrada and Luis Gerardo Méndez in the cast, and was afterwards invited into the Spanish production and moved to Spain for a time. Telenovelas kept a place for her: Daniela in Destilando amor, then Teresa, as the protagonist’s sister, and Amor bravío, which closed her Televisa contract. She also had a small part in Déficit, Gael García Bernal’s first film as a director.

Telemundo signed her in 2013. El Señor de los Cielos followed Aurelio Casillas, played by Rafael Amaya, one of Mexico’s most powerful traffickers of the 1990s. Castillo’s Mónica was the youngest of the Robles siblings, the one who ran their money, and the show’s cruellest trick was to make her the most devoted person in the life of the man who wiped out her family. The writers brought her back from an apparent death, moved her from rival to lover and later to the side of Aurelio’s nephew Víctor, and promoted her to the main cast from the second season. Telemundo’s Premios Tu Mundo named her favourite lead actress in a series in 2015 and 2016. At the end of the fifth season, in 2017, the character was shot dead. “Yo no lo hubiera acabado así,” Castillo told People en Español. “Pero los actores nunca decidimos ese tipo de cosas.”

What followed was a deliberate change of register. In 2018 she took her first film lead in Una mujer sin filtro, a Mexican remake of the Chilean comedy Sin filtro, which sold more than a million tickets in its first five days, and her first telenovela lead in Telemundo’s Enemigo íntimo, opposite her former co-star Raúl Méndez. She joined the No manches Frida school comedies and gained weight to play the lead in Dulce familia.

The trouble is that the escape route ran through one kind of film. Most of those features were commercial comedies, several of them remakes of foreign hits (No manches Frida reworked the German Fack ju Göhte). They made her bankable without changing what people thought she could do. Luis Eduardo Reyes, who directed Una mujer sin filtro, said it bluntly at the time: “Fernanda es una mujer versátil, lo que pasa es que la han estereotipado.” Eight years on, headlines still introduce her as the actress from El Señor de los Cielos. The narco-telenovela drew audiences in their millions and steady criticism for turning traffickers into romantic leads, and her best-loved character was the one who made the romance work. She has never disowned it. “Yo vivía para ser Mónica Robles, entonces jamás voy a renegar de él,” she has said. The comedies moved her sideways.

Streaming has moved her further. In 2021 Pantaya signed her to a multiyear deal to star in and co-produce, and in 2022 she returned to the stage as the lead of Siete veces adiós. She played Lucía Estrada in ViX’s Isla Brava, a showbiz journalist in Luis Gerardo Méndez’s Technoboys, and the ex-partner of Michel Brown‘s character in Netflix’s Lo mejor del mundo, another remake, this time of an Argentine film. Then came Las locuras, Rodrigo García’s Netflix film about six women pushed by madness into decisions they had been putting off. In April 2026 Prime Video released its series of Isabel Allende’s La casa de los espíritus, with Castillo as Férula Trueba, the unmarried sister who gives her life to Esteban’s household and to his wife Clara until he throws her out, opposite Alfonso Herrera and Dolores Fonzi. On 2 October Prime Video premiered Prefiero la muerte, Sebastián Sariñana’s zombie comedy set in a small Mexican town, where she plays Sara Díaz, the investigator who takes the teenagers seriously. She told Marie Claire México that she now looks for “algo que no haya hecho, algo que me emocione, algo que me rete para otro lugar”.

Her private life has stayed mostly private. She has been with the actor Erik Hayser since the mid-2010s; they became engaged in 2020, and their son, Liam, was born that December. In February 2026 her father, the surgeon Rafael Castillo, died after decades with Parkinson’s disease. This year she also went back to where she started, rejoining Estrada and Méndez for a 20th-anniversary staging of Hoy no me puedo levantar produced by Alejandro Gou, who calls the three of them his partners.

La ley de Alicia arrives on Netflix in two parts, on 11 November and 9 December 2026, with Juan Manuel Bernal as the disgraced Aurelio and Brown as David, the college boyfriend who now owns the firm where Alicia has to start again. This time the series turns on a woman’s competence rather than her desire, and the woman is Castillo’s to play. If it works, the audience that still says Mónica Robles will have a second name to call her.
