Few actors leave a hit show on their own terms and then walk back into it as if the door had never closed. Chord Overstreet did it once, when he turned down a short, unguaranteed return to Glee to try his luck as a musician and was back in the choir room within months. He may be about to do it again. With a Glee reboot ordered by Disney+ and Hulu, Overstreet is in talks to reprise Sam Evans, the transfer student who joined the football team and the glee club, a character he has spent a decade trying to outgrow and has never quite been allowed to put down.

The question his career keeps asking is which of his two trades is the day job. He grew up in a house that had already answered it for his father: Paul Overstreet wrote “Forever and Ever, Amen” and “On the Other Hand” for Randy Travis, and named his son after a musical term. Chord was raised on a farm outside Nashville, homeschooled, and steered toward instruments early, starting on the mandolin before moving to drums, flute, piano and guitar. His older brother, Nash, went on to play guitar in the pop-rock band Hot Chelle Rae.

Overstreet, who was born in Nashville on February 17, 1989, modelled as a teenager for Hollister, Gap and Famous Footwear, and began chasing performing work after finishing school in 2007. The first two years produced almost nothing. Then the jobs came in small pieces: the web series Private, a single episode of iCarly, a pilot of No Ordinary Family that never aired, and a first film role as Adam in Joe Dante‘s The Hole in 2009.

Sam Evans arrived in the second season of Glee, in 2010. Overstreet had auditioned with the Commodores’ “Easy” and Gavin DeGraw’s “I Don’t Want to Be”, and his debut episode had him sing “Billionaire”, a cover that reached No. 28 in the United States and No. 15 in Ireland. In July 2011, TVLine reported that his option to become a series regular had not been picked up. Fans pushed the hashtag #DontCutTheChord into Twitter’s trending list, the producers offered a ten-episode deal, and Overstreet said no. “There was nothing guaranteed so I decided to dive into the music thing,” he explained at the time. By October the decision had reversed: Ryan Murphy confirmed he would return from the eighth episode of the third season, and from the fourth season until the show ended in 2015 he was a regular, for 91 episodes in all. In 2013 the role earned him a Teen Choice Award as Choice TV Male Scene Stealer. Along the way came A Warrior’s Heart, alongside Ashley Greene and Kellan Lutz, and the comedy 4th Man Out in 2015.

When Glee closed, the music finally got its turn. In December 2015 he became the first artist signed to Safehouse Records, the label founded by Demi Lovato, Nick Jonas and Phil McIntyre, and in the summer of 2016 he opened dates of their Future Now Tour. His debut single, “Homeland”, a song about where he came from, appeared that August through Island and Safehouse. “Hold On” followed in February 2017, then the EP Tree House Tapes in May, and that summer he sang “Hold On” on Today and on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon.

Here the tidy version of his story, the TV actor who became a singer-songwriter, starts to bend. “Hold On” did not chart on release. Its success arrived years later and almost without him: the RIAA certified it double Platinum in August 2021, and it went Platinum in the United Kingdom and Gold in Italy, on the strength of sales and streams that kept coming long after the release push was over. Meanwhile the catalogue scattered across names and labels, with a project billed simply as OVERSTREET, the EPs Man on the Moon and OVERSTREET, and a solo EP, Stone Man, on an independent label in 2021. There is still no full-length album. The gamble that justified walking away from Glee produced one song that lasts, and the audience found it on its own schedule. The trade he treated as the backup, acting, is the one that kept paying.

The screen work that followed was steadier than the music. He played Tom in the Hulu comedy The Swing of Things in 2020, and from October 2021 he was Chad Davies in Apple TV+’s bilingual comedy Acapulco, opposite Eugenio Derbez. Chad, the general manager of the Las Colinas resort and son of its owner, is the boyfriend standing between the young Máximo and the girl he wants. He held it through four seasons, the last of which aired in the summer of 2025. In between came Netflix’s Falling for Christmas in 2022, as Jake Russell opposite Lindsay Lohan, and in 2024 a guest turn in Doctor Odyssey, a Ryan Murphy series, his first job with the Glee co-creator in nearly a decade.

That reunion now looks like a rehearsal. In October 2026, the same week Disney+ and Hulu ordered a Glee reboot from 20th Television, Deadline reported that Overstreet and Heather Morris were in talks to return, joining Lea Michele, who is in talks to reprise Rachel Berry. Murphy had said a month earlier that he was in touch with around ten members of the original cast. No deal has been announced, and neither the plot nor a production schedule has been made public.

He turns 38 in February, with a back catalogue that keeps finding listeners and a television past that keeps finding him. If the talks close, Overstreet will be back where he started, in a role he first played at twenty-one, this time with the knowledge that leaving was never quite the end of it.
