IVE turns ‘Looks Can Kill’ into a superhero spin-off of its self-confidence era

IVE has put out “Looks Can Kill” ahead of the EP it names, and the song arrives with a new alter ego attached. Starship Entertainment pitches the release as a spin-off of the group’s “Girl Fantasy” characters: after Cupid and the magical girl, the six members now play a “Girl Hero”, a figure who has already won by the time she walks into the room.

The stakes are bigger than one costume change. This is the title track itself, not a side song released to fill the gap before the record, so the comeback’s main event is already in listeners’ hands. Starship’s album notes say the song pushes IVE’s long-running message of confidence and self-belief one step further, turning even the moment of attraction into a story the group controls.

The music video plays that idea on two levels. It borrows the grammar of a superhero film, with An Yujin, Gaeul, Rei, Jang Wonyoung, Liz and Leeseo in colour-coded suits, then keeps stepping off the set to show them as stars hired to play heroes. The label describes the arc as a move from IVE acting the part to IVE being the heroes in their own right. On STARSHIP’s YouTube channel, the video passed 2.2 million views within roughly five hours.

Musically, “Looks Can Kill” is electronic dance pop built in layers. According to the label’s track notes, it opens on a synth-pad rhythm, stacks a heavy, rough bassline, driving drums and dense electronic textures on top, then flips the mood in the bridge before a final chorus written as the payoff. The track runs 3:15.

The credits put a member in the writers’ room. Rei co-wrote the lyrics with Gaeko of Dynamic Duo, Seo Ji-eum, Lil Cherry and Rick Bridges, and shares the rap-making credit with Bridges. The music is credited to Charles Roberts Nelsen, BAVA, Ashley Fulton, Jason Hahs and MLITE, with Inverness and BAVA on the arrangement.

The open question is how much is new under the cape. Self-assurance has been IVE’s core subject for years, and by Starship’s own description this title track intensifies that message rather than changing it, so the superhero suit is a fresh frame on a familiar thesis. The pace is also brisk. This is the group’s third major release of the year, after the REVIVE+ album and the LUCID DREAM EP, and the rest of the new EP is still unheard, so nobody outside the company can yet say whether the record sounds like this single or only dresses like it.

The single is out on streaming services worldwide, including Melon in Korea, Spotify and Apple Music, with distribution through Kakao Entertainment.

“Looks Can Kill” went live on October 19 at 6 p.m. KST as a pre-release that Starship announced on September 27 alongside the comeback schedule. The full EP of the same name follows on October 26, eight months after REVIVE+ arrived in February and five months after LUCID DREAM in May.
