The Remarried Empress breaks a Disney+ record and crowns actress Shin Min-a a global lead

Disney's biggest local premiere ever belongs to a veteran, not a newcomer. Netflix made Shin Min-a an international name; this record gives her a global title role of her own.

Disney‘s biggest local premiere ever does not belong to a newcomer. The Remarried Empress has set the record for a local original on Disney+ and Hulu, and the woman wearing the crown is Shin Min-a, an actress Korea has known since she was a teenager in commercials. The rest of the world met her later, and mostly on a rival service. This record is what a long career looks like when it finally gets a global title role of its own.

The coverage so far has run Disney’s announcement and moved on: the record, the markets, the schedule, a cast list read as a block. It skipped the obvious question of who carries the show. Shin plays Empress Navier, the wife who agrees to her husband’s divorce on one condition, that she may marry his rival. That bargain is the whole premise, and the South China Morning Post’s critic called her, “for all intents and purposes, Korea’s first Disney Princess.”

What Disney is actually claiming

According to Disney, The Remarried Empress became the most viewed local original premiere of all time on Disney+ and Hulu globally, based on its first three days of views. It also ranks as the number one Korean title premiere in more than 50 markets, among them the US, the UK, France, Spain, Germany, Mexico, Chile, Australia, New Zealand and Canada.

Read the fine print. The Hollywood Reporter notes that Disney did not disclose viewing figures, so the record rests on Disney’s own count over a three-day window. What the trade does add is the comparison that matters: the series displaces Moving, the 2023 superhero drama that became the streamer’s most watched Korean original, a hit concentrated in South Korea and Asia. This one is posting records across Europe and the Americas, a broader breakthrough than Moving managed, in the trade’s reading.

Shin Min-a’s long road to Navier

Shin, born Yang Min-a, started modeling in 1998 after a friend entered her photo in a teen magazine competition without telling her. Commercials made her one of Korea’s “four teenage commercial stars”, and she made her acting debut in 2000. The rom-com My Girlfriend Is a Gumiho made her best known in 2010, and Oh My Venus brought her the Best Actress in a Miniseries prize at the KBS Drama Awards in 2015.

Her international reach came through Netflix. Hometown Cha-Cha-Cha, in 2021, became one of the platform’s most watched non-English series, staying on its non-English list for 16 weeks and reaching the top 10 in more than 20 countries. In 2022 she played a divorcee raising a child in Our Blues, and last year she starred in the Netflix crime thriller Karma.

This year she also showed she can open a film alone. Her solo-lead thriller The Eyes, in which she plays twin sisters, drew 1.5 million moviegoers in Korea and, as SBS Star reported, pushed Disney’s own Toy Story 5 off the top of the box office. The same year she beat Disney at the multiplex, she became the face of its biggest local launch.

There is a quieter thread inside the casting, too. Ju Ji-hoon, who plays the faithless Emperor Sovieshu, was her co-star in the 2007 psychological thriller Lucifer. Nearly two decades later the pair are the marriage the whole series is built to dissolve.

The reception is cooler than the press release

At home the verdict is more measured. Korea’s Dispatch reported that the premiere drew passing marks for entertainment value, with praise for the sets and the score, but also complaints: some viewers found Korean actors playing a Western imperial family unfamiliar, and others were disappointed by certain CG effects and by the sheer volume of costumes and hairstyles.

That gap is where the lead matters. The Hollywood Reporter argues the show’s appeal is its grown-up charge, a fairy-tale heroine facing infidelity, divorce and a strategically useful second marriage. Those are adult stakes, and Shin has already played a divorcee in Our Blues. The opulence is Disney’s contribution. The adult bargain at its center is the part critics keep pointing to, and it rests on Shin.

The rest of the launch numbers point the same way. Disney says the payoff trailer drew 13 million views in its first 48 hours, the Naver webtoon behind the series has close to three billion views, and preview screenings at the Busan International Film Festival sold out.

How to watch and what comes next

The Remarried Empress has ten episodes. Disney released the first four on November 3, a day ahead of the planned November 4 launch, as a thank-you to fans. Two new episodes arrive every Wednesday from November 11 until the finale on November 25, exclusively on Disney+ and Hulu. Cho Suwon directs from an adaptation by Yeoh Geena and Hyun Choongyeol, based on Alphatart’s web novel and the Naver webtoon. Lee Jongsuk plays Crown Prince Heinrey and Lee Seyoung plays Rashta, the runaway slave Sovieshu takes as his mistress.

Shin’s next announced role is already back on Korean broadcast television: the MBC drama Wednesday-Thursday-Friday, slated for 2027. Disney has the record. Shin Min-a has the leverage.
