The opening shot of “The Long Night” (2022) is a close-up of Scout Taylor-Compton’s wide, terrified eyes, reflecting the flickering light of a dying campfire. It’s an image that promises tension and dread, but the film struggles to sustain this early promise.

Director Rich Ragsdale’s horror film follows a couple, Grace (Taylor-Compton) and Jack (Nolan Gerard Funk), whose peaceful weekend retreat is disrupted by a cult led by the menacing Master (Deborah Kara Unger). The premise is simple and familiar, but it’s executed with a certain level of commitment to its bizarre vision. Ragsdale creates an atmosphere of unease, particularly in the film’s early scenes, where the sound design—rustling leaves, distant whispers—heightens the sense of impending doom.

The film’s strongest moments come from its practical effects and gory makeup work, which give the cult members a nightmarish, otherworldly appearance. The Master, in particular, is a chilling presence, with Unger chewing every line of dialogue with relish. Jeff Fahey also stands out as Wayne, a gruff survivalist who provides some much-needed levity amidst the horror.

However, “The Long Night” stumbles in its execution. The pacing is uneven, with long stretches of exposition and character development that slow down the momentum. The dialogue often feels stiff and unnatural, and the characters themselves are thinly drawn, making it difficult to care about their fates. Moreover, the film’s attempt to tie into larger apocalyptic themes feels tacked on and underdeveloped.

The film also suffers from a lack of originality. While it borrows heavily from “Game of Thrones” (with its own ‘Long Night’ episode being a clear inspiration), it fails to bring anything new to the table. The cult’s motivations are vague, and the film’s attempts at world-building feel half-hearted.

That said, “The Long Night” does succeed in creating a certain kind of vibe—one that fans of low-budget horror might appreciate.
