Few names define prestige horror on streaming as clearly as Mike Flanagan‘s, whose Netflix run turned the haunted house into a binge format and a family tragedy. Now one of the writers from his inner circle, Jeff Howard, is joining the producers of Get Out on a ghost series that skips the single-book adaptation altogether and treats a novelist’s whole shelf as one haunted map.

As Deadline first reported, Impossible Dream Entertainment, the company behind Jordan Peele‘s Get Out and Spike Lee’s BlacKkKlansman, is teaming with the UK’s Wall to Wall to develop and executive produce The Invited, a supernatural mystery thriller inspired by the ghost stories of bestselling author Wendy Webb. No Webb novel carries that title. The plan is to weave her collective works into one interconnected haunted world that expands season after season, rooted in Wharton, the fictional, historic lakeside town where her books unfold.

The writing pairing bridges British television drama and American horror. Helen Black, whose Life and Death in the Warehouse earned BAFTA and International Emmy nominations, is adapting in collaboration with Howard. Black co-wrote the second season of the BBC anthology Time with Jimmy McGovern and created Channel 5’s The Wives. Howard co-wrote Oculus, Ouija: Origin of Evil and Gerald’s Game with Flanagan, was a writer and supervising producer on The Haunting of Hill House and executive produced Midnight Mass.

That résumé explains the structure. Flanagan’s Haunting shows taught audiences to accept a ghost story told across a whole season; The Invited bets that a novelist’s entire catalogue can sustain several. “Wendy Webb’s novels have it all—drama, romance, tension and scares—with rich characters and haunting mysteries made for series television,” said Shaun Redick, who secured the rights with his wife, Yvette Yates Redick. “The best ghost stories don’t just scare you. They follow you home,” she added.

For Impossible Dream, the project extends a slate that also includes Netflix’s vampire action comedy Day Shift, starring Jamie Foxx, the upcoming true-life thriller Free Agent with Michael Peña and Anthony Ramos, and a reimagining of The Boondock Saints. Wall to Wall, part of the Warner Bros. International Television Production Group, brings British drama credits such as Waterloo Road, The Girl and The Windermere Children.

Season 1 will adapt Webb’s novel The End of Temperance Dare; further details are being kept under wraps, and no network or streamer has been announced. A Minnesota native, Webb most recently published The Witches of Santo Stefano in 2024, after books including The Haunting of Brynn Wilder, Daughters of the Lake and The Tale of Halcyon Crane.

Webb says she saw Get Out three times in a theater and has binge-watched Midnight Mass and Hill House more times than she cares to admit. When Redick called about a series, she “had to sit, staring into space, for a good long while.” The people behind both are now moving into her town.
