The final season brings in the parents: Nighy as Nahla Ake's long-lived Lanthanite father, DeWitt as the first lady of Betazed.

Star Trek has always known the quickest way to make a starship captain human: send in a parent. Starfleet Academy, heading into its last semester, has reached for that oldest lever. Bill Nighy joins the second season as Nyk Ake, the estranged father of Nahla Ake, the captain of the USS Athena and chancellor of the Academy, played by Holly Hunter.

Most of the coverage out of New York Comic Con filed the news as one more guest-star bulletin. Read beside the franchise’s own family history, it says something more pointed about where the final season is headed. Rosemarie DeWitt was announced in the same breath as Laytha Sadal, mother of the Betazoid cadet Tarima and first lady of Betazed. A show about students is spending its goodbye on the people who raised them.

The detail that lifts Nighy’s casting above a marquee name is biology. Nahla is half-human and half-Lanthanite, as CBR notes, and Nyk is the Lanthanite side of the family; RedShirtsAlwaysDie describes him as full Lanthanite. The species entered the canon through Carol Kane‘s Pelia on Strange New Worlds, an engineer from a people who look human and can live for millennia. A rift between a long-lived daughter and a father built to outlast her is not the ordinary family quarrel. Paramount+ has not said how deep this one runs, or how many episodes Nyk stays aboard. The casting alone tells you the writers think the wound deserves an actor of Nighy’s weight.

It also fits the shape of Nahla’s story so far. The first season opened with her sitting in judgment at the trial of Caleb Mir and his mother, a case that drove her out of Starfleet in shame before she returned to run the Academy and to bargain with Caleb over finding that same mother. The show has been about parents and children from its first scene. Its final run now turns the question on the chancellor herself.

Trek has staged this reckoning before, and the ancestors are instructive. Sarek arrived in the original series’ “Journey to Babel” as Spock’s father, the two men estranged for eighteen years because Spock chose Starfleet over the Vulcan Science Academy. They found their way back only after Spock helped save Sarek’s life. DeWitt’s role has an even clearer forebear: a Betazoid mother of rank visiting a daughter in uniform is the Lwaxana Troi template, the Daughter of the Fifth House that Majel Barrett, Gene Roddenberry’s wife, carried through The Next Generation and Deep Space Nine. Whether Laytha Sadal arrives as homage or correction, nobody outside the convention hall has seen enough to say.

For Nighy, genre has never been slumming. He was Davy Jones in the Pirates of the Caribbean sequels, Slartibartfast in The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy and Thomas Newton in the series version of The Man Who Fell to Earth. The more telling credit is the recent one. In Living, Kazuo Ishiguro’s reworking of Kurosawa’s Ikiru, he played a London bureaucrat with a fatal diagnosis deciding what to do with the time he had left, and earned a Best Actor Oscar nomination for it. Here he plays a man from a species for whom time is barely a constraint, cast as the father of the woman who runs the place.

The clock that matters is the show’s own. Paramount+ confirmed in March that Starfleet Academy would end with its second season, less than two weeks after the first-season finale, at a moment when critics had been broadly warm and audience scores had been review-bombed. “We are in post-production now on what will be the second and final season,” Alex Kurtzman, who runs the series with Noga Landau, said in remarks reported by TVLine.

Season two returns on Paramount+ in March 2027, with an exact date still to come, for ten episodes. The synopsis sends the cadets into their second year aboard the USS Athena, with rivalries, diplomatic negotiations, “a fiercely competitive schoolwide tournament” and a mysterious new cadet, Keats, played by Ruaridh Aldington. Paramount+ has released the first episodic images, Nighy and DeWitt among them; the first-look footage shown at the panel was not shared online.

Spock and Sarek needed eighteen years and a brush with death to speak again. The Akes get ten episodes, and then the Academy closes its doors for good.
