Grief and desire rarely share the same frame as comfortably as they do in Love of Your Life, the sophomore feature from cinematographer-turned-director Rachel Morrison. Margaret Qualley anchors the film as Maya, a woman who falls hard, loses everything, and then has to decide whether a second great love is a betrayal or a lifeline.

The story opens on a meet-cute with real friction. Maya crosses paths with Charlie, played by Gabriel Basso, over a jammed desk drawer and a stray cassette tape, and the sweeping romance that follows reorders her entire sense of the future. Morrison, the first woman ever nominated for an Academy Award in cinematography, shoots their early happiness with the unguarded warmth that made her camerawork on Mudbound and Black Panther so widely admired.

Then the film breaks its own spell. Charlie’s severe asthma turns lethal as a pandemic closes in, and the narrative leaps forward to find Maya adrift in Lisbon, a widow in her early thirties who smokes, drinks, and keeps human connection at arm’s length. Aaron Pierre’s Felix arrives as the disruption she does not want and cannot quite refuse, embodying the film’s central argument that living again is harder, and far less romantic, than falling in love the first time.

Qualley is in the middle of a remarkable run, moving from the body-horror provocation of The Substance to prestige awards fare, and Maya asks something different of her again. This is a performance built not on transformation but on endurance, on the small refusals of a person who will not let herself be healed on anyone else’s schedule. The film hands her long stretches without dialogue, trusting her face to carry the distance between who Maya was and who she is forced to become.

Morrison made her directorial debut with The Fire Inside, the Claressa Shields boxing biopic, and this confirms that her move behind the camera is no novelty. She frames the Portuguese coastline and the cramped interiors of mourning with the same instinct for light that defined her years as one of the industry’s most sought-after cinematographers, though here the images have to carry emotional weight rather than simply document beauty.

The screenplay is by Julia Cox, and the ensemble around Qualley is unusually deep for a streaming romance. Patrick Schwarzenegger and Tamara Lawrance fill out Maya’s orbit, Catherine Keener lends the kind of gravity that grief dramas live or die on, and Corey Johnson rounds out the cast. Ryan Gosling and Jessie Henderson produce for Amazon MGM Studios, a pedigree that signals how seriously the studio is backing a mid-budget adult drama at a moment when few of them reach a wide audience at all.

Not everyone at the world premiere was won over. Reviewing the Toronto bow for TheWrap, Steve Pond called the film “schizophrenic at times, enamored of joyous moments but undercutting the pleasure with pain,” and flagged a structure that can feel scattered as it hops across a decade of Maya’s life. That is the real risk baked into the project: a movie about the messiness of mourning can itself turn messy, and Morrison’s appetite for beauty does not always resolve into a clear throughline. What the film proves about her range as a storyteller, as opposed to an image-maker, is still an open question.

The release strategy tells its own story. The film launched in Toronto’s Special Presentations program before a brief theatrical window, after which it moves to Prime Video, where the bulk of its audience will actually meet it. That is the increasingly familiar path for Amazon MGM’s prestige-adjacent titles: a festival berth and a token run in cinemas to qualify for awards conversation and reviews, followed by the streaming drop that is the real commercial event.

Whether the film earns its emotional swings or simply gestures at them, it is a genuine test of what Morrison can do with actors and a story rather than a lens, and of whether Qualley can hold a movie whose whole subject is the refusal to move on. Love of Your Life opens in US theaters on October 7 before arriving on Prime Video worldwide on October 14, where audiences across Spain, France, Germany, Mexico, and Brazil will find it the same week.
