Name: A Legacy of Spies

George Smiley has always been defined less by what he does than by how still he can stay: the owlish civil servant in thick glasses who wins the Cold War by listening. On television that stillness has belonged to Alec Guinness since the BBC’s Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy and Smiley’s People, and on the big screen to Gary Oldman‘s Oscar-nominated turn for Tomas Alfredson. Matthew Macfadyen now inherits the glasses, and the first images from Legacy of Spies put him squarely in that lineage.

The BBC and MGM+ released the first-look stills to mark the end of production in the Czech Republic, as Deadline reported, showing the Succession star in Smiley’s trademark frames alongside Charlie Hunnam as Alec Leamas. The eight-part drama is the character’s first return to television in four decades, and it arrives as a UK-U.S. co-production rather than a purely British one.

The source text is the novel that made John le Carré’s name, The Spy Who Came in from the Cold, folded together with material from A Legacy of Spies, his 2017 late return to the Circus. According to the official synopsis released by the producers, Leamas, a seasoned field operative, recruits Doris Quinz (Devrim Lingnau Islamoğlu), a young East German woman, to smuggle high-value Stasi documents into the West. The same synopsis sets two rival Stasi officers on their trail, Josef Fiedler (Daniel Brühl) and Hans-Dieter Mundt (Felix Kammerer), and casts Agnes O’Casey as Liz Gold, the idealist pulled into the action.

The Circus bench is deep. Dan Stevens is Bill Haydon, Jake Dunn is Peter Guillam, Anjana Vasan is Connie Sachs, Charlotte Ritchie is Ann Smiley and Joe Alwyn is Jim Prideaux. Hugh Laurie, whose casting surfaced in June, plays Control, the commanding head of the service and Smiley’s morally fickle superior. For Laurie it is a second le Carré series from The Ink Factory after The Night Manager.

That company is the le Carré family business, run by the author’s sons Simon and Stephen Cornwell. Stephen writes the series with Clarissa Ingram and serves as showrunner; Nick Cornwell is executive producer for the estate. Michael Lennox, fresh from Say Nothing, is lead director, with Claudia Llosa as second director. Amusement Park Film, the outfit behind All Quiet on the Western Front, co-produces, and Graham Yost, Macfadyen and Hunnam are among the executive producers.

No premiere date has been set. Legacy of Spies will launch on BBC One and BBC iPlayer in the UK and on MGM+ in the U.S., Germany, Spain, Italy, Austria, Belgium, the Netherlands, Brazil and Spanish-speaking Latin America. SBS will carry it in Australia, with Sky in New Zealand and Switzerland and CANAL+ across France and French-speaking territories, Central and Eastern Europe and Sub-Saharan Africa. Fifth Season handles global sales, and the commission came from BBC Drama director Lindsay Salt.

Smiley goes back to the BBC with three of le Carré’s sons in the credits: the family that inherited the Circus is now the one deciding who wears the glasses.
